Ok I tested out fork, chain and lmp and I looked at concentrated effect with Elemental Proliferation , now shooting out one fireball using concentrated effect with Elemental Proliferation is 1000x better if ur looking for damage because one hit with a crt is gonna splash and damage every mob, concentrated effect would make the damage more and Elemental Proliferation would make the area of the splash more. Bad thing about this is that the mobs need to stay in groups now with chain it can never miss and u can easily hit mobs from longer range now chain u can kill groups of mobs the same way but with Elemental Proliferation and concentrated effect would be a more effective now im not saying im gonna use chain with ele proli, con effect cuz that wouldnt be a good combo.
Now I think it comes down to what do u like cuz both are good to use. I dont think it matters if I use fork, chain, gmp/lmp and yes I know I lose damage but if u look on the gem it say (when its lvled) it say % less projectile damage but then it say when its lvled the projectile damage gets increased so ur not losing that much damage so in a way the ur not really losing damage. So now im thinking what would be better with fireball chain u need to hit a mob for it to chain and same with fork but with gmp/lmp u dont really need to aim cuz ur shooting out 3 or 5 shots and ur not losing out of to much damage so I was thinking of using one of thos gems with Chance to Ignite , fireball, faster casting orrr maybe use gmp with fork faster casting and fireball lol |

" *sigh* and *monsterfacepalm* what you want is high initial hit high crit crit multiplier alot of burn duration high single traget dmg thats all you need who cares if you can fastcast a fireball when the burning effect is still in progress and lasts 4 sec ? to explain it for dummies this it how it goes you hit something with a fireball with a really high chance to ignite on hit no need for the chance to ignite since flammability burn duration and fireball give that once they have % once the target gets hit the burn spreads with elemental prof yeah i know your favorite streamer doesnt play it but that doesnt mean such a spec isnt viable add shock stacking and enjoy a monsterburn shock nova totem should be perfect for this https://poe-ssf.herokuapp.com/. As I see it, there is 2 main ways to use fireball: massive AoE spam to bring down big mob packs, or utilizing burn damage, which works best when you modify your fireball into a small local nuke. Your support gem setup will be very different depending on which route you decide to go. With my current character I chose burning.
If you want to ignite & burn enemies, you need to understand how burning damage works. Burn damage is one third of the initial hit damage per second, over 4 seconds. So if you hit a monster with 100 fire damage and ignite it, the burn effects will deal 133 additional damage (4/3 * 100) for a total of 233 damage. Opponents resistance is a huge factor in this all, because it is applied twice: first for the initial hit and then again for the burning. If the monster in the previous example had 50% fire resistance, the initial hit would have dealt 50 damage, and the burning damage would have been 4/3 * 50 * 0,5 = 33 damage, for total damage of 83. Almost 64% of total damage gone because of 50% fire res. On the other hand, bringing monster resistance to negatives gives burn damage a huge bonus. If you could bring the example monster down to -50% fire res using fire penetration / flammability (also adds small chance to ignite) / elemental weakness, the initial hit would do 150 damage and burn damage would increase to 300! Over 90% increase in total damage for 50% resistance reduction. So... if you want to burn stuff, take fire penetration support and use flammability / elemental weakness (or even both if you go for dual curses). Elemental proliferation is another "must have" support in my opinion, with it it's so easy to spread the flames and bring down big packs. Right now I have chance to ignite support in my 4L setup in addition to abovementioned supports, because for now, it's easily the most effective way for me to trigger ignites. When I get my crit chance higher and get quality fireball gem, I will replace it with something else. I believe my ideal 6L setup would be fire pen + elem prof + conc effect + increased burn dmg + increased crit chance + increased crit dmg. Faster projectiles is a nice support (fireball is slow), but at least wands can roll that particular modifier. I have no experience on the "AoE spam" method, but LMP/GMP + fork + chain sounds good. I don't know whether the AoE splash of fireball triggers on forking/chaining. It doesn't trigger on piercing as far as I know. Experiment & have fun. edit: forgot to mention that fire penetration support does not apply to burning damage, but it still helps indirectly by boosting the initial hit. If you want a more in-depth explanation of how to optimize your fireball, in my opinion, check out my extensive guide here.

You can build your fireballer that way if you focus on the avg damage per hit instead of the burn, but it will be an attempt to compete on something which is not the strength of fireball.
There are many faceroll builds using gmp/fork and so forth which will be better because they hit nearly instant and freeze/shock enemies. You can still do it using the same ideas as those builds, but it will not be quite as effective, though still fun i imagine.
