You absolutely don't need spell supp to be tanky, Chieftain was reworked for a reason.

You absolutely don't need a mix of armor and evasion as long as you have decent recovery and Iron Reflexes.

Or you might not need armor and evasion at all if you are a Pathfinder.

Certain builds available to Inquisitor and Trickster don't need armor either, they get by thanks to constant super high life/ES regen.

And so on

It's not that you are doing wrong. It's from the limit of skill tree design.

It's basically the same as armour enchantment but more to suit your build archetype.
