Name Shaming
|
Currently name shaming is against the rules on these forums. Why? I feel I have a right to know of the possibility of people trying to scam me, rip me off, or trying to kill me in the Hard Core league for laughs. Sure people will make false reports but I'd rather be able to decide for myself whether to interact with them or not and I'd like to know that I should be cautious when dealing with certain people. I understand this game is meant to be cutthroat, but while ripping people off and killing their characters in HC may be fun for some people, it certainly isn't fun for the people that are on the receiving end.
None of the above has ever happened to me but I do see a lot of threads about it. |

Because without proof, shaming is just that, shaming. Your name as well as his/hers.
A friend of mine just recently posted the name of someone who killed him with explosive arrow in HC league using a known glitch with burning damage and proliferation and the thread was locked and edited instantly. As far as I'm concerned, there should be a thread made for blacklisting accusations specifically. |

Hi there,
The reason for the naming and shaming rule is because these types of threads are considered harassment. There are currently trading systems in effect that prevent you from being scammed if you use them in the correct way. It's up to the players to confirm that the items they're receiving are the correct ones. It's our policy not to get involved in player trade disputes, as we don't have the resources to fully investigate each one and police them. If we allowed name and shame threads then any player could create a thread regarding another player and slander their reputation without any proof. Kind regards, Bex | |
" You can't prove a negative. If I come to the forums and post "Sorrowfal is a scammer!" how would you prove you aren't? You can't. If I have even half an ounce of photoshop skills I can link to 'proof' of your 'scamming' and you'll be left trying to defend your rep in game and dealing with people not trading with you due to a lie. Realize that the only part of the equation you can affect in the GIFT is the audience. Remove the audience and the trolls merely rant at the air. |

^agreed. In CB so called name and shame just because some noob wanted to pay 1 alt for a 1 chaos gem, almost ruined my trading rep then. why? because that noob went around yelling on global chat to everybody who'd listen that I was trying to get his chaos without giving him a skill gem and 'overpricing' all my goods.
What do you think that would have done in OB? I'd have been completely ostracized by the sheeple who believe everything they read. 1337 21gn17ur3 Last edited by ExiledToWraeclast#6661 on Apr 18, 2013, 12:01:01 AM

" That's what i just posted. e.g.crystal scammed me 10 gcp! See what i did there. You can't prove otherwise. My post got deleted by Bex and antagonistic response?? wtf The rest of the 'end-game' content will be available along with a heap of new stuff when the game launches in a few months time. From what I've seen it's going to be awesome. - Michael_GGG

" Remember you can't attack other players. Perhaps now you understand why people who have been scammed or have nearly been scammed are so confused and frustrated when mods come down on them. "I haven't done anything wrong, why I am the one being punished." |

I have encouraged people in the past to start third-party boards and sites for things like naming-and-shaming. Obviously our authority doesn't extend that far and I am, personally, a huge fan of the name-and-shame culture. I think it works beautifully in real life, but it has to be remembered that what is offered in real life but doesn't exist here is a measure of veracity to the claims.
So please understand that the exclusion of name-and-shame threads isn't because we condone the reprehensible acts of these scumbags. It's purely because we have no way of really knowing real accusations from false, and since this is the official forum for Path of Exile, it would be very inappropriate to allow unverified accusations to fly wild. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

" In real life there are a number of fora where people can do stuff like that. One such fora has a no-revocation policy; they do not, under any circumstances, permit posters to retract what they say. Thus began the story of a certain nameless woman. Let's just say a bit incensed over something, and decided to say something that was later ruled to be quite defamatory about yet a different party, a man. Thus began her travails. She attempted to take down her defamatory remark. The site would not permit it. The defamed party sued to site, and it went to court. The web site invoked an obscure set of laws designed to protect ISP's and 3rd party content publishers from litigation. As part of their defense, they invoked immunity under this set of laws, and successfully argued this before the court. The court ruled in their favor: they were not required to take down the defaming message. Back to the woman. This left her in quite the pickle. See, her post was still up there, causing the defamed party damages. I should imagine, since the liability was ongoing and not likely to end soon, so were the damages ongoing and perpetual. While I never heard what happened in the later potion of this case, I can rather imagine what happened to our hapless woman: BANKRUPTCY. So. You have referred to one side of the coin. I believe we can now consider that coin flipped. And yeah, I know PoE is just a game. Perhaps, however, you can see how GGG may want to stay fully out of all this mess, even if it isn't actually a game of Global Thermonuclear War(tm). --C Last edited by Courageous#0687 on Apr 18, 2013, 12:33:49 AM

" No arguments here -- name and shame can always backfire, even in real life -- thus my not-so-subtle 'go do this somewhere else if you want to do it' call. :P If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.
