Huge Memory Usage

Hi there! Is there some way wherein the game's Memory Usage could be lowered? When I check my Task Manager, its Memory Usage reaches up to 1,000,000K+ which is pretty brutal compared to other games. It slows the computer significantly and it's too hard to alt-tab to check my e-mail, Facebook, updates, etc. from my Google Chrome and Opera browser because it freezes or lags for some time. Here are my laptop's specs - Asus K42D Laptop, CPU: AMD Phenom II 3 Cores N830 2.1G, VGA: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5476, VRAM: 1GB, Display: 14" HD (LEB BL), HDD: 320GB, Memory: 2GB, OS: Windows 7 Ultimate

Hope something can be done to lower the Memory Usage because I play at other better PCs and the game eats too much Memory as well. On top of that, alt+tab should be similarly avoided because my browser and games lags or freezes during the process.

Thank you very much. Keep up the good work. The game has been very good so far. :D

1GB just is not considered that much these days. 8GB DIMMS are what? $80? So... I wouldn't get my hopes up. If you're experiencing significant performance problems in alt-tabbing, this makes me suspect that you are swapping things that ought to be in RAM to and from disk. That's just terrible.

Time to upgrade to 64 bit windows. Get 8GB when you do.

given that this is a Laptop, The VRAM is probably not separate and dedicated but rather system Ram that has been "permanently" assigned to the Video Card. in some cases like this the on-board video card will snag more system ram when demands are high. Lowering settings in the game might help but if your settings are already bottomed out there is no hope there.

Secondly while Win7 is MUCH better about memory usage than Vista or win8, compared to XP its still a bit piggy. Win7 runs smoothly with around 1gb of ram free, The more running in the background the more you are gonna find issues of Memory not being enough and the system swapping to paging heavily (system slow down) you didn't say if the HDD is an SSD or not so given the slow downs I am assuming not. This means when the system starts paging heavily, using the HDD as extra ram, it creates a bottle neck that can lead to significant system slow downs.

Not to be down on your laptop but 2gb really isn't much ram these days. Particularly not on a win7 system. The best I could suggest is killing all the background apps except the Virus Scanner. If you have already done this there is little else you can do unfortunately.
you could try running windowed mode? at worst you would increase initial load times and may have reduced FPS, PoE isnt GFX intensive in comparison to other games anyway (tomb raider, crysis3, farcry3 etc) chances are you should be able to run in windowed mode without any issues, removing alt tab issues. if u haven't already done so reducing your resolution should have the largest impact.

There are HUGE memory issues. IIRC just running the game is like 4gb of my 6gbs of ram. That's insane. I have DDR2 on my desktop, I looked into upgrading to 8gb and it would cost about $250, so...no thanks.

Eh? I haven't seen the client go past ~1.2GB in quite some time. Months, back when I think they had a memory leak. There's something strange... in the neighborhood... who ya gonna call?

Anyway, sounds like a bug. The game doesn't require 4GB to run. I'd file a report in the bugs board.

p.s. regarding the DDR2 in your desktop that makes it... what?.... 5 years old? Sounds a bit long in the tooth to me.

I don't think it is possible for PoE to consume 4 GB. Check again.

About the laptop - what were you thinking when you bought it with 2GB of RAM?
That pretty much means it will be struggling with any applications that consume large amounts of RAM - video and image editing, games, even browsers - Chrome and Opera can easily consume over 1 GB by themselves. Win 7 by itself consumes 700+ MB with no additional programs running.

So even if it has a good CPU, you simply won't be able to use it much.

4 GB is probably the minimum you should be looking for.

@OP, u can try Firefox and the separate tool "Firemin" it reduces my FF from about 800MB with several tabs to around 11MB, without any noticeable change in my browsing experience!
I use this on my 2GB laptop as well and works fine.

Opera, especially if x64, consumes a lot of memory. I'd know, it's my favourite browser (RIP...).

On my laptop, with Intel HD 2000/4 GB RAM, PoE took 2.5 GB, and partially pushed other apps from memory (kid you not...)

On my workstation, with 32 GB RAM, I think it took 4 GB RAM or something, but don't remember this good as I never had issues with it obviously, unlike with the laptop.

Well, guess that proves it that this game has one of the worst memeory management I've seen in games)

Besides, packing the entire game in one gigantic file? Cmon, the word "fragmentation" rings a bell?

As for Opera, don't use it. Sure, its slick, convenient, and has many features built-in.
However:
- the worst selection of plugins
- the worst CPU management
- one of the worst memory management, especially if you watch videos
- the worst session management. Deletes backup sessions on crash
- no plugins for session management (I kid you not)
- Adblock-type plugins take MUCH more resources than in Chrome/FF
and a few other things.
After I lost the second session after crash I just deleted Opera, since as I mentioned before it deletes your backup session instead of restoring it, and decided to never use it again.
