Roguelike vs Rogue-lite and why the distinction is important when discussing Sanctum
" This seems very inspiring to me... You seem to be an expert when it comes to arpg games. I'm just curious about this inspired post: is this your experience inspired by playing the 3.20 expansion or is it just your theoretical experience? |

" I don't recognise those abbreviations so it's not likely. I wrote a Necromancer guide for Diabloii.net's forum (the one run by or at least moderated by a dude called Flux I believe it was? Or was it Rush?) and some Necromancer fanfic parody thingy (I honestly don't remember much about it other than it was translated into a few languages which I found quite touching), but my style of writing has changed a lot since then. That was...holy shit, almost 20 years ago. I dislike using the word 'cringe' these days since someone went and made it an adjective, but I do cringe when I think about who I was back then, and how I behaved on the internet. Please understanding I'm not dismissing the rest of your response by selectively addressing a small portion of it: I have nothing to add other than 'thank you for your knowledge'. " Entirely theoretical/academic -- I have no desire to play Path of Exile in its current state. I treat the feedback and discussion here like case studies. Unlike actual academic works, I don't have to worry about ethical considerations when using people as subjects. I am no expert on ARPGs, or indeed anything. Too much of a dilettante for that. I just remembered reading various articles and discussions on rogue-lite vs roguelike and wondered if the distinction applied here. And as I said elsewhere in this thread, I feel a lot of misplaced claims for why/how Sanctum fails are based on the false premise of people expecting it to conform to the framework of a roguelike. I find that unfair to GGG and the people who designed the league. I'm not sure what this post inspires but I'll take that over it discouraging someone. :) If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between. I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period. Last edited by Foreverhappychan#4626 on Dec 15, 2022, 7:20:50 AM

Guys. Is it only me, or this league content feels like totally negating any need for tank builds... I am playing poe since dominion league, and i always play tanks - in every game i play - and since now, every league was fine - i was just getting less loot etc
But now - i cant play tank, as to do dmg i need to take hits, and if i take hits, i lose the sanctum... Before launch, they were telling that this league will provide beneficial fo any playstyle, but i must heavily disagree with that. Glad with bonus for block and counters makes sanctum impossible to finish... |

" Yup. I've rolled a Bane wielder with pretty much zero defences and the only reason I've not cleared the whole Sanctum yet is that I'm getting to depths that I'm not familiar with yet. Second floor boss was done on literally my first try. It's really awful. |

I'm not much in to Rougelike yet, but do like the element from time to time. This is the first time I hear Rougelite and definition of it. Good to learn new thing every day.
Pretty sure you know why it can't be rougelike with PoE. It's may be good as event only..... If they accept the fact that this event design for only some build to exist. Better to slash the rat in Chaos Waste for this kind of experience. Slow in, slow out cuz I'm just a player.

" 100% agree. I love the gameplay of Vermintide 2 but I found the campaign missions too long and demanding at times. Chaos Wastes do a great job of isolating what V2 does best (frantic horde slaying) and minimising the baggage of objectives and that awful crafting system. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

Dear diary,
after a few alch-purchases (which definietly deduct 3 weeks from the playtime) and 2runs, i have to say its neither. A roguelite would require me getting those relics. And a roguelike would require me getting boons, all you get is "5 chaos orbs later" and these kind of rewards are not classified as powerups. Sometimes theres a merchant which sells half spirithearts in form of "25%less resolve from hits", in other games you could bomb a tinted rock and get a full load of spirithearts. There is no itempedestal per room, only afflictions await you to make it worse to progress. The mechanics to beat it are pretty simple, stay far away outside of aggrorange and lob artillery at them, this results in not having to deal with resolve. Am i allowed to classify it as just a bad minigame ? From a technical standpoint the resulting ping makes it hard to differentiate where monsters are casting a spell/attack, its basically impossible to know where to stand and where not to, a red circle on the ground is missing. You can cut down the time dancing around those invisible red circles by dealing more damage significantly. Its a fun sidedungeon, if it wouldn´t be limited by one per map, a standalone detached from mapping would have been better. Its a welcome sight after getting only timepressure-leagues. Its a welcome sight to not get monsters that oneshot you all the time, they still have plenty of hitpoints though added with inevitable 30%inc life and movespeed and attackspeed. Today i died to the usual laggy mechanics in a game that tried to be like Isaac. Atleast i killed the rat once which didn´t drop anything. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drDs-Y5DNH8
