The notion that PoE's 4.0 expansion propels the game into AAA status is frankly absurd. Its not even remotely a new game. Like at all. It's old, the net code isnt great, and the engine isnt next gen competitive. Not to mention poor optimization, graphical limitations, active screen clutter, loot & filtering insanity, and a whole host of other shit.
And in terms of player retention, sheer numbers, and general appeal, PoE is likely going to have it's worse 12-months ever performance wise. D4 is coming, in late spring/early summer (April- June), and the player population for PoE leagues will be a Fallout-esque nuclear wasteland.
With Exilecon in July, only a number of weeks post D4 launch, they better have something far more interesting to sell than a 4.0 beta of an alternative campaign, shared atlas endgame, some mechanical twists, and passive tree reworks with Ascendency options. That wont cut it considering D4 is also going to be quarterly live service.

Haha! The copium at extreme levels here. If you dont think D4 will siphon off 50%+ players, and decimate active players in the first couple legaues you are in a PoE induced fever dream.
That said I dont want PoE killed (and Tencent wont allow it until after 4.0 anyways) as competition is good for both games, and people can play both or alternate, but let's not bury our head in the sand on reality. This is goning to be brutal for PoE near-term. Anyone saying otherwise is deliberately obtuse.
Edit: also beta related embargo NDA expired today. There are quite a few articles, with nearly all being very positive.

D4 definitely going to hit a league but I doubt it'll hit 2, which is part of the problem with Blizzard's approach these days :p

Blizzard games always see immediate success followed by immediate decline.
I have no doubt D4 will sell millions of copies... and 3-4 weeks after launch, 90% of those players will have moved on to something else.
Blizzard games have a great art style. Rich lore. A relatively high level of "polish". As well as broad appeal. What they seldom have is depth and complexity which are PoE's winningest attributes. They're for people with low time investment.
The type of gamer who has sunk years of their life into Path of Exile didn't do it simply out of boredom, waiting for the next Diablo title. They did it because the game can genuinely offer them something to occupy thousands of hours--shallow game experiences have a very hard time doing that for the average person. These two games are not in direct competition with each other.
GGG has stated in the past that most of their MTX sales are front-loaded with the launch of a new league/expansion--and in that regard, I can see a D4 launch hurting GGG's bottom line for a given window (and GGG has also delayed leagues to avoid such impacts). However, the idea of a mass exodus from PoE just because D4 launched? I don't see that happening.
Will I play D4? Sure.
Will playing D4 replace my desire to play PoE? No. And to take it one step further; Playing D4 will likely ruin my desire to play D4 (as has been the trend with all of Blizzard's titles).

Spot on
Is it a ton of instant gratification fun? Yes
Is it a ton of long term fun? Hell no
I think it's too late in the day with the impending release for them to drastically change the itemization and loot system or horrible dungeon design which for me at least were the real fun killers. Hopefully though things will be improved on post launch.

AAA is just a term used for budgets and PoE's budget is no doubt huge. AAA game confirmed.
