Finally uninstalled POE today, after almost reaching level 100 again and then being slaughtered 3 times (again) in cortex map as a result of synthesised map mods combination I could not have possibly seen and prepared for, without 3rd party software (glory to the ToS and its wisdom).
Such a steep exp penatly with such small exp gain is only justified in a polished, documented, and well-telegraphed combat, not in this asinine mess where incoming dps can fluctuate between 0% and 500+% of your EHP without any warning.
My only regret is that I didn't see PoE policy for what it was and allowed myself to spend $ on it. GGG straight up exploits people, putting them at impossible odds on purpose, hoping to milk more money and retention from their frustration, banning those seeking to improve Cave Age QoL with 3rd party software, and at the same time dismissing criticism with "we are hardcore game, buy it (playing without special stash tabs is impossible, so PoE never was a free game), or leave".
So, I am leaving. Good luck everyone, I hope you can keep enjoying this game.
Why on earth would you do cortex while having xp to lose if you care about xp? And not only that. You say "again"??? So you did that move once already and repeated it? The self imposed pain people are putting themselves through is astonishing... haha

you were at level 99 and you chose to do cortex. thats really on you.
And do you really think this is "okay" situation? When players wishing to level up should either buy themselves one of the very few meta-tanky builds or set aside any remotely rewarding content and spam dry standard maps, or breachstones/5ways if they are rich?
On a side note, that particuliar Cortex was the last in series of synthesis maps I had, and I did the rest of them deathless. But cortex came up with a "HH" synthesis affix (get mob affixes after you kill them), causing me to get the "boon" of being teleported straight into boss and its area denial dots without my consent. Would you expect all players to endure such design indefinitely, keep losing tons of exp to something you cannot have possibly reacted to, and re-grinding?
death penalty has always been in the game and we are thought this by the first time we killed kitava. goes up to 10% later and you already know that. you somehow got to level 99. i dont know what content you did, but you got there. then you managed to get more xp. this shows you CAN play without dying, and i m certain you do know the risks of difficult maps.
i can tell you, i am indeed struggling to level. i am 97 now, i keep running safe magic maps, i abandon maps whenever i encounter porcupine packs. i avoid metamorph and a select few other league mechanics due to their volatile damage spike.
reaching level 100 is a long grind. the reward is "being level 100". it is work. it is an achievement, and the best part of this achievement is that ANY build can do it. only it takes a long ass time.
you chose to run cortex. you had the option of not running it. you could have waited till after reaching 100 to run it, or at worst if for unlocking purposes, run it using a different character. most of my friends are lower leveled than me. its likely we're less powerful than you, but at the very least we understand that any risky content should be run when at 0% xp/level up. whenever we're at 0, we go bonkers running stupid maps. we even avoid joining our friends risky maps if we've accumulated a lot of xp.
i shouldnt need to explain this to you, you're higher leveled than me. you were bored of the grind. you tried the map, died, could have quit the map but you went back in 3 times to lose 30%, sure maybe i can say ok the first death was BS. but you went back in a few more times? you're frustrated. i understand that. i really do. sometimes i just alt tab or bang the table or watever, but in many cases i realize, i died because i chose to run risky content.
keep your emotions in check.
could things be better/different? thats highly subjective. if you take away the 10% xp penalty, EVERYONE would be level 100. being level 100 loses all meaning, and you would rob all the previous exiles level 100 achievements.
every person who got thru level 100 went thru the same shit, perhaps with some variations due to builds or utilizing guilds/partying/using breachstones whatever.
take a break. come back and get to 100 some other time. the grinding process has already broken you.

If we take the both the current state of oneshot "balance" and death penalty for granted, as something existing now and forever, then you have indeed described my feelings accurately, thank you for understanding.
My usual farming is a rare map with 4 sextants and 4 scarabs and atlas tree targeting strongboxes, shrines, harbinger, anything to increase generic mob density. And I still level up like a snail at lvl 99.
Trust me, 97 to 98 is a breeze in comparison. Bosses are the only thing that can threaten me, and I could not have seen the cortex map modifiers before getting killed out of the blue for the first time (the "beneficial mod", that teleports you in the middle of boss aoe hazard or into boss itself? Really?). From there, it went downhill, just as you said.

plz tell me where i can find all these oneshots, they seem to be missing in my poe client
seriously...
these simply dont happen unless atleast 1 of these factors are present
-undergear for the content you are running
-bad rolled maps i.e. added dmg as an element + reduced max resi + crit
-too much stuff "added" to the map like 3x beyond or too many harbingers so you get 2 king harbinger in 1 spot
-heavily misjudging the situation on screen (not dodging on death effects, freeze strongboxes etc=
-new content that isnt properly tuned yet
most of the time even these factors dont kill you when you know in what kind of content you are in and play accordingly

You have already answered your own question, each of the reasons you listed is enough to consider death penalty an overkill and a torture for players. Am I to blame and to be executed with erased progression for how easy it is to run into "bad rolled", "too much stuff added", for the visual clutter making you unable to see ground aoe degens, and for all the "not properly tuned yet" content?
About "undergearing", I happen to be not using shields on purpose, because I don't like their looks, hence no block and no influenced regen/heal on block that carries many builds, from melee to necromancers. Does that mean I should be doomed to lose in this game, which is bragging many creative tools and build variation, yet doesn't offer similar defensive layers for evasion characters?
If GGG wants players to beta test their crazy designs (example: recent fix for oil ground attack from exarch mobs, which likely cost someone their exp), they should at least reduce the death penalty. And to consider current penalty "justified", a lot of work should be done to smooth the edges of balance, which isn't happening anytime soon.
If a game's business strategy basically expects a large category of players to receive only frustration in the end, and only after they invest a lot of time (and $) into game (midgame is much more forgiving, so you get a false impression your build is "fine"), I consider such business strategy "bad" and cynical, and said so in earlier posts. That's it, and I never expected majority of people there to agree with me, merely stated an opinion.

XP penalty is stupid considering the amount of bullshit one shot deaths that happens in this game.
It's a huge waste of time and makes me want to quit, losing XP at very high level makes you lose your motivation to play by a lot.
