If they did what you are suggesting then probably 3/4 of the players would be done with this game after one season. It would make it way too easy.

Uhh... what? A repair bill is a MUCH HARSHER punishment than losing some exp, my dude. If you're upset about casual players not being able to level up because they died to an offscreen one-shot, how upset do you think they'd be when they literally had no usable items and had to go back to act one to grind currency for repairs?

Finally uninstalled POE today, after almost reaching level 100 again and then being slaughtered 3 times (again) in cortex map as a result of synthesised map mods combination I could not have possibly seen and prepared for, without 3rd party software (glory to the ToS and its wisdom).
Such a steep exp penatly with such small exp gain is only justified in a polished, documented, and well-telegraphed combat, not in this asinine mess where incoming dps can fluctuate between 0% and 500+% of your EHP without any warning. My only regret is that I didn't see PoE policy for what it was and allowed myself to spend $ on it. GGG straight up exploits people, putting them at impossible odds on purpose, hoping to milk more money and retention from their frustration, banning those seeking to improve Cave Age QoL with 3rd party software, and at the same time dismissing criticism with "we are hardcore game, buy it (playing without special stash tabs is impossible, so PoE never was a free game), or leave". So, I am leaving. Good luck everyone, I hope you can keep enjoying this game. |

" Not sure they're getting much retention from frustration, that would be a pretty weird way to attain mass appeal and make big bucks, hard games are pretty niche. I strongly suspect even fromsoft games are making a decent profit mostly because you have to buy the game first and then see if it's too hard for you or not, and when the next one comes out people go "I'm wiser and stronger this time, I'll beat it", so they buy again and never finish it :) Sure, it would be scummy if GGG did this and then sold you exp boosters, but they don't. Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

" They do, and it is pretty smart (if disgusting) move: 1) Choose hardcore "no-life" players as your target audience, ones willing to link most of their self-actualization to a video game (often because of problems in real life) 2) Set up a content that "we don't expect majority of players to beat", while hardcore players would inevitably beat it, because above-mentioned asinine mess works both ways, and you will eventually discover stupid exploit builds if you are stubborn enough. No-lifers are also tolerant to absence of QoL in trade in UI, since they have time for it. 3) If a hardcore player manages to become one of the minority playerbase beating this content, player would feel more than a brief satisfaction like other video games could offer, but a true recognition from the fact of how few people are reaching lvl 100 (after exp calculation nerfs) or doing the top tier Maven crucibles. Streams, fans, rankings, feeling himself at the apex of community. 4) These feelings create an illusion of self-actualization, a loop of exploring game further and achieve even better numbers. 5) Profit. Spending money on the locus of your life comes naturally, and GGG is always ready to help, serving new leagues and new MTX. (And of course, shifting balance back and forth without really changing the core of it, it is very important to continue draining these people) Last edited by Echothesis#7320 on Mar 9, 2022, 7:11:04 AM

In other words, in order for the 5% of playerbase to lead the game and stand loyal to GGG, there should always exist the rest 95% of playerbase, to serve as laughing stock for the leaders, reassuring them of the magnitude of their own achievements here.
This is what I call making money on frustration, because GGG is well aware of what casual players would feel trying to push trough PoE, and they don't care about it. Last edited by Echothesis#7320 on Mar 9, 2022, 7:26:04 AM

" Seems like an unhealthy way to look at the whole thing. It's kinda like saying it's wrong that only 0.001% of all people that play football can do it on a pro level, everyone else is paying to watch them because they're frustrated about not being able to play nearly as well, and the ones providing the entertainment are making money from their frustration. Most things can be dissected into looking ugly as a baboon's bottom, and most of the time it won't bring anyone involved anything worthwhile. Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

I disagree, because in football there are always other, lower challenge leagues, where you can still play and get some revenue from it, as well as victory sense.
In PoE, there is no global difficulty levels, like Diablo 3 has for example, no "Easy Mode". You don't get to choose how you would like to play the game, and it is safe to say majority of newcomers here don't expect they are not supposed to even see endgame content without choosing very specific viable build and grinding currency heavily. |
