nobody has problem with only maybe 5 max out of the like 100 skill gems are usable?
Just remove all gems with "melee" tag except maybe some slams and cyclone. No one will complain. This is the state of the game currently, sadly.

Only cyclone for me. Rest feel like ass. Cyclone straight up or Cyclone to cast dozens of spells like discharge, EK, Frost bolt, ice nova, Purifying flame etc Cyclone rules. I hate archers most of all. Like stop shoot stop shoot stop shoot run Forrest run. So tiring game play wise.

Why melee sucks:
-Slow, need to get close to mobs -Risky, need to get close to mobs -No range, need to get close to mobs -No dmg, most strike skills are forced to waste 2 sockets on ancestral call and splash -Dps scales only from expensive gear, where other builds get op dmg from just gem levels. Imagine if you had to waste 2 links on spell builds for dumb shit like "cast" support to be able to cast a spell at all, and "area" for a spell to become aoe in the first place. But melee has to, ancestral call and splash. No support for trigger stuff. Casters get spellslinger, why not melee builds? Cast on melee kill should be reworked to reserve maybe 5% life for each skill linked, warcries should work with it too. So you can have a 6L main attack, and off gear 4L comk+ warcry+ steelskin+ curse or whatever you like. Something like this would barely bring some balance and revive melee builds. |

Melee skills are bad simply because they are melee. In the time it takes you to get close to monsters, other builds will already decimate entire screen.
There is no place for "true melee" in current PoE. Only popular melee skills dont even feel like melee. Lightning Strike? Feels like a bow skill, w/o the Bow. Cyclone? Feels like RF, but scaled with weapon instead. |

" Agree, at least a little bit. "True melee", as people call it, does not have a place in the current pace and density of PoE. But that's not the main problem here. The problem, is that weapon scaling as a whole is lacking behind gem scaling, at least early and mid game. You really need so sink exalts into a weapon-scaling build to make it comparable to certain other builds. And that is exactly WHY old, forgotten skills with bad mechanics designed when the game was slower and less dense NEED a mechanical AND numeric buff. Skills like Double Strike, Dual Strike and Heavy Strike NEED either a built-in AoE or a built-in secondary effect. Skills like Reave and Cleave need an AoE upgrade - at least. EDIT: There are TONS of people out there wanting to play some of these skills, but stay away because they know they will be putting a handicap on themselves for playing those skills. I don't mind this, usually. Let's say there's classes, a mage starts with a flame arrow, later gets fireball and ends up with nova magma orb. The latter replaces the first - but it only available at very high mage level which would require a real big grind.
In PoE they're all immediately available and each one of them contests another. Not even bound by class - you can literally get everything before the end of story mode. So given that, many more should be viable. But balance is not really a thing in PoE, so meta shifting I guess is the next best. That current state of the game though....how do you reward something like viper strike in maps without support like poison prolif? And if such skills need such support - can you even make skills that don't need that and still have balance? Plus - everything competes with the max - which is basically offscreening explosions or something. Well at least speedy and large clear. Tis all been said before. Did you try turning it off and on again?

I finally had to give up on Cleave and move to Double Strike, Heavy Strike and Reave. Frost Blades is great fun, but hardly feels like melee; it is as far as I've ever gotten away from what I think of as melee.
