For those still experiencing issues, you could try the alternate patching port to see if that helps. Thomas has posted instructions on how to do this here.

Also can't connect to the patching server as suggested.
Downloaded through steam and works fine but would prefer to use the standalone. Any idea on a fix timing? (not the end of the world to use the steam version but still) Ty |

i got the same problem few minutes ago
after i disabled my firewall windows and many attempt to install it it works :D i hope the game wont cash now :)) |

This is still an issue after a week of trying to install this game. The alternate patching server can't be connected to, even after opening up firewall ports for it. ISP is Virgin (UK) if that helps, I think others have this exact problem with the provider too.
