Does POE feel less scary than Diablo?
Just to show you what kind of horror PoE instills, they made the actual God of actual Horror and put him in the game.
Yep, we fight Yugul in the storyline. He's the sicko child psychologist who became obsessed with rooting out the Platonic ideal of fear itself, remember? What are children secretly most terrified of?
Spoiler
*crickets* *no, seriously, crickets* and ice. Little puddles of ice. Okay maybe some of us who have driven on the Jersey Turnpike in February during a snowstorm can relate to how spoopy it is to merge right and see a shimmer of black on the road ahead. Or feel your ride fishtailing downhill towards a traffic light that's aging like fine yellow cheddar. I think some way of incorporating that loosy-goosey feeling of pirouetting into gridlocked traffic at enough speed to mess up your grille, putting that sensation into the fight would have been keen. That's terrifying at any age. Some kind of in-game physics for the arena that makes you unable to stop if you use a movement skill, or magnifies inertia in some way totally different from tempchains or other slowing effects. Or having the crickets jumbled together outlining the vague shape of something familiar, and then when you engage the boss, the crickets suddenly stop chirping, all hop away, leaving a skeletonized husk of what you thought was a familiar shape: a house, a tree, a dog. Nah instead we'll reproduce the Fantasia footage from The Nutcracker's Snow Queen act, because damn son, when I was a kid and my folks dragged me to see the Royal Ballet production, that was hands down the most terrifying part of the evening, was when the ice fairies came out and traced frost across the stage and the bells started up, man give me Borodino and blood in the snow any day but not the fairies. ...fuck me, you done or is there a spot your flamethrower missed?
If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

I wouldnt say Diablo is scary, especially the cartoon that Diablo III was. However, Diablo I and II were definitely darker games. How can you even compare saving the world from Demons and Bank Robbing/Farming Leagues. Thats not to say PoE doesnt have its moments (Kitava, Malachai, etc.) but PoE overall doesnt have as dark of a theme set as say the original Diablos or Grim Dawn.
