Soul Mantle "RIP" Classic build of 6 years

This actually pisses me off. Legitimately OP things like ED and Penance Brand and Miners got no nerf, but they dumpster soul mantle and don't even list it in the patch notes properly.

They ruined one use of it that they didn't want in the game. Reduced Curse was too strong for it. So instead of nerfing everything else, by removing Reduced Curse Effect, the mitigated it by adding the -80%. They've admitted it was overkill and are working on a fix. Get over it.

But that's objectively wrong. They put in the increased curse effect to compensate for removing curse levels from enemies, without realizing how idiotic that is because additive scaling is different from multiplicative scaling like levels. They're changing it to more curse effect so to make it the same as it was before and to unfuck curse effect reduction. Read their statements on it carefully before you falsely attribute their reasoning.

It was not intended as a nerf to anything, it was intended to keep the old functionality of the previous curse levels that it inflicted, and they implemented it poorly, and are thus in the midst of reverting it to something that doesn't change things it wasn't supposed to.
There's no powercreep here. Creep implies it's slow and could be overlooked, this is a full out sprint.

Burning your house down to kill a spider is overkill. Grinding Gear Games' current solution is more akin to dropping the planet into the sun in order to kill a spider.

It's being fixed in a patch, Soul Mantle will curse with 80% more effect instead, so you can still get 100% reduced.

Honestly, that doesn't sound much better from my perspective. It still means you're cornholed into using curse effect reduction items in order to make using Soul Mantle survivable.

So far as I can tell it doesn't matter whether it's 80% increased or 80% more effect, without curse effect reduction items you're still getting a 100% elemental resistance reduction with all curses up, and that's something that will be difficult if not impossible for (m)any builds to eat without a problem.

If that does pan out post-update then it's a flagrant violation of statements Grinding Gear Games has made in the past regarding "mandatory" gear/skills. They've nerfed/changed multiple skills/passives because they were "mandatory" for virtually all builds, and now here they are changing Soul Mantle in such a way as to make Kikazaru rings and curse effect reduction passives mandatory if you want to use Soul Mantle.

____

Now here's my question; what's the biggest issue with reduction of curse effect with regards to Soul Mantle?

The only thing I can think of is its interaction with the Self-Flagellation gem, and in that case I'd think that "Increases and reductions to curse/hex effectiveness affect this bonus" being applied to Self-Flagellation would have been a good way of curbing its use to get lots of "free" increased damage.

Soul Mantle grants a 3rd or 4th totem, plus a free link for your main skill, and the potential to max out Self-Flagellation. This is a massive damage boost, and it makes sense that it would come at a steep price, either in survivability or in passives/gear slots. Atziri's Reflection is always there as a chase item for you to work towards. Until then, you could always, y'know, use a Warding flask.

The whole point of soul mantle is to use it for self flagration...

If you use a curse flask don't even bother with that unique

I think the curses are supposed to be a penalty to offset the extra totem etc., not for playing Emperor Palatine: "More curses! MORE POWAH!"

There should be a limit to how many curses you can handle, and it shouldn't be a required item.

If they change it to 80% more effect then soul mantle will work exactly as before and the curses on you would have exactly the same effect as before. Curses are all now lvl1.

So far as I can tell it doesn't matter whether it's 80% increased or 80% more effect,
80% increased: if you have 100% curse effect reduction, you only get 20% curse reduction final because it is additive.

80% more: if you have 100% curse effect reduction, then 80% more of 0% is still 0% because more is multiplicative.

That's how I understand it anyway.
