Diablo 3 OPEN BETA

Well, I have three instances now of Brian advocating D3 as a worthy game (in-game, interview, here) and I just want to say: awesome.

I just received the email from elly at incgamers about the open beta. It made me smirk a little, but mostly it surprised me that they'd be doing it this late in the game. Stress test? I doubt it. A teaser? maybe. Been plenty of those. Or it could just be a gesture of goodwill.

Either way, I hope everyone who tries it, loves it as much as I did D1 and D2. That's a lot of love. It looks like an absolute smash of a game. It's just not for me.

Aww, you know how you can capture flies with honey? So, yeah, my take would be a teaser.

Anyway, they're already botching it for me because the Beta client has a slew of issues which do not even allow me to start it without a hitch. Dependency on IE for example. Or that the executable needs admin rights, but doesn't ask for them.

Dude, this is scheduled for release in two weeks? Meaning that this client (ironically called "retail client" in the error dump) is what's shipping?

Good god.

That sucks, I had no problems at all. Which is just as well, because I tried it long before I found Path of Exile and wouldn't have even this to fall back on.

On a related note: there was some heartell that we might see more Cut-Throat this weekend -- suggested by Chris *before* any word of a D3 beta weekend. I'll be interested to see if that still happens, of if the PoE devs take a deserved weekend off having fun in Tristram and its underground vistas...
If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.
Well, I'm quite savvy when it comes to fixing things on computers. But I've been doing a bit of a follow-up on how common these issues are. Seems there's a whole thread in the Beta forums just discussing the various ways the client may not work.
And my system is well cared for and clean. But seems that even setting IE in "Offline Mode" prohibits the client from working in some cases.

Frankly, it's not something I've ever had to experience with Blizzard products to this day. Up until now, they ran without a hitch (save for 64-bit WoW, which takes a very minor hands-on approach to patching).
Ten years before I'd have said "well, sucks, but it's nothing gamers can't handle".
But since then, gamers have drastically changed, and I think that the majority would be hard pressed if they encountered such problems.

All in all, it's nothing major. But two weeks from release it does not speak well of the state of the game. It's simply not the old "Blizzard standard".

you will not lost the 49% you have download already.
Just a little FYI. You're better acquiring the files from elsewhere than Blizzard. For example if you have a Rapidshare account you should be able to find it for download... Then you can download at your full speed at least. I tried from Blizzard and was downloading at like 250KB/s, so I found Rapidshare links and downloaded it at my full download speed of around 8000KB/s (60Mb connection).
