Isn't PoE's Steam description false advertisement?

Free to play has become a confusing term with our youths it seems. So entitled.
The game is free to play, aka you can load it up without spending a penny and play it. |

OP: If you want to play a "free-to-play" game with ongoing support and development, then you have two options:
1.) Realize that MTX are what funds the game and buy them (or not). 2.) Watch a 30 second advertisement every time you login, step into a portal, enter a new game region, interact with a NPC, etc. Pick one. I know which one that I prefer... If you want NEITHER of those, go to Epic and play whatever game-of-the-week they're bribing you with to visit their site or go to GOG and play some 15-20 year old games. that is the difference, the game itself is not free, it is free to play.
You cant access mtx without paying, by definition it is not free. It is optional content but to access it you pay, and yes, a 3d model is a content, another menu -stash tab- is also a content. I will never be good but always I try to improve.

My motto questions in any f2p to classify it as true f2p is:
Does the game makes all content available so I can finish it without blocking me behind paywalls? If yes then good Does the game sells power from its mtx so I can cheat myself through it and ?If yes that's a no-no for a free game. So,if I can play the game, without getting interrupted constantly by ads, finish it and replay it anytime for as much as I want, without buying or forced to buy then it's f2p in my eyes. Ofcourse I would be pissed off if I had 1/4 of inventory or just 1 stash. That would classify as forced to buy so I would deem it not f2p.But thats not the case here.Poe is As fre as you can get in this f2p space Bye bye desync!

I like to assume these posts are coming from competing developers who realize their game is absolute shit comparatively and so attack community trust instead of improving what they made... instead of just personal idiocy and overabundance of free time that could be used to you know, make money to pay for in game shinies.

It is still completely free and not pay to win, BUT it's win over the game itself, not against others players. Because not having instant sell premium, currency, fragments, maps, div, tabs is just a pain in the path, and enormous disadvantage.

Content when it comes to MMO has been for more thena decade now clearly understood to be what you actually play in. Things like MTX and storage have never been included in that definition.
Turbine and DDO are generally hailed as the best example of an early adopter of the FTP model in the western market. They are basically the standard. And they made it very clear content was classes, races, and dungeons. Thats it. Everything else is optional accessories. In fact DDO then took it a step further and defined expansions as non content, forcing even subscribers to buy them when the monthly sub clearly included all content packs. The fact PoE gave us the new 1-10 chapter expansion and now is working on PoE 2 for an entire additional campaign that will be free makes them quite generous in the MMO ftp companies. The disconnect here is not understanding that that which you actively play in or with in other words the classes, skills, and maps are content. Cosmetics and storage do not count as content as they are not relevant when your actively playing, leveling up, or clearing a map. You cant expand your character storage just you stash storage as an example. |

PoE is absolutely free-to-play.
That said, calling 'most' free-to-play games "totally free" is often a huge stretch. There's CLEAR distinction between "free" and "free-to-play", so using "totally free" in advertisement/descriptions is wrong. Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.

" There's no real rules of what should be "included or not". MTX is optional for sure, until some skills become so disturbing for eyes only the MTX version is playable several hours in a row. Storage is optional, until you realize the one you get for free is so small you will simply not being able to progress properly in the game. Premium tabs are -very- important too. The "absolutely free" is very nasty. Noticed that since few years the staff completely abandoned this argument in their announcements or posts. The real story is that Steam is using a deprecated slogan. |
