Will PoE support third party mods?
Yeah I thought they said they would support mods, you just would be in a different league/server. I don't see why they wouldn't support them other from the obvious strain it might cause the server.

Think about user created content from the point of view of a free to play game:
In order for any f2p to work, it has to have just the right level of difficulty, meaning slightly too hard without shop items. If the game is to easy, noone will buy anything from your shop other than maybe some cosmetics, if it is too hard, it will repell any potential new players who don't plan to instantly pay money but instead try it out for a while. This is actually a very fine and difficult line for a f2p game to walk. If you allow user created content, you will completely lose control over this part of the game, since you cant control how hard those user controlled contents are, what items drop, how much experience players get - or put simply, it will completely destroy their business model. So no, I don't think modded content will ever happen here. There is a possibility for allowing UI mods and stuff, but even that requires more effort than you'd probably think. I think some of you are confusing the different usages of the term Mod.
A safe method for modding usually involves a UI API. This has nothing to do with cheating or hacking... it's just skinning the game UI to your liking, often moving or tweaking existing functionality. Furthermore, you cannot stop hardcore modding (hacking) because it involves injection, which by its very nature, is unstoppable... no matter what protections you put into place, you can always jump out of them, modify the result and return. Another usage is to actually change game functionality and content via usage of engine and content scripting. I seriously doubt they'd ever expose that to the community. So will GGG implement a UI API anytime in the remote future? No, probably not. Would it have anything to do with hacking or cheating if they did? No, it wouldn't. " Thought I'd just address this part: no power-enhancing shop items are planned. The difficulty of the game will be the same whether or not you use the shop - the benefits planned are akin to what you might find in League of Legends. I have wandered through insanity;
I have walked the spiral out. Heard its twisted dreamed inanity In a whisper, in a shout. In the babbling cacophony The refrains are all the same: "[permutations of humanity] are unworthy of the name!" |

" Not even things like increased EXP or Drop rate? In LoL you can definitely get more powerful faster by spending money, which DOES make the game easier in my opinion. Last edited by Wightnish#5323 on Sep 13, 2011, 2:56:27 PM

They stated that there will be no power for cash. So no XP or Drop potion/Scroll/whatever you may call it. Nor will there be allmighty Weapons/Armors or the like. You can make yourself, your skills, armor and weapon look awesome, thats enough to make me pay for it at the very least. Plus you have to pay, if you want to hold your very own league. Another thing is, there wont be mod enabling for your own league i think. The risks would still be the same, since it allows people to break the code open and tinker with it in a absolutely legitimate way, which is never a good thing for a F2P! There wont even a official LAN version for this game for, one might think, this very reason.
UI modding is a completely different thing, even though i dont know how much of the code will be modding friendly, since they possibly dont want to have the user know everything whats happening. Which is quite impossible, if a UI mod shows every friggin stat for w/e is on your screen at that moment. If its only modding for the looks, that is something which might be possible... even though there is a way for some revenue here so thats alittle tricky. Honestly, id rather take a UI from their item shop to fund them further, than taking it for free. (Even if it is better looking.) |

exp scrolls do not grant power, it just makes u lvl up faster.
if im lvl 10 without a exp scroll and i fight someone lvl 10 with a exp scroll theres no difference in power. |

In my oppinion it sure is a way of power, after all you get to lvl 10 with much less effort. Same with the drop enhancing, which might be even worse since this game revolves around getting items. Some might call it just "indirect" power, but it is still power for cash and i am against that all the way.

" Point, wasn't thinking of those, just the skins. And no, they're not planning to offer drop/experience rate items to my knowledge. I have wandered through insanity;
