Will PoE support third party mods?

i support mods. who wouldnt want to play diablo/titan quest levels on this beautiful engine? with mods people could do that.

this is why GGG should release a single-player offline version with Lan or the ability to host games along with giving people an SDK. you could make new levels , bosses, or completely re-do the game similar to the MedianXL mod for D2.

think about games like crysis and oblivion with their huge modding communities. some oblivion mods are really quite amazing.
I really really hope not.

It's a 2 way street. By allowing mods, you are effectively allowing in bots and hackers as well.

Sure, there would be people who don't resort to either, and naturally I could forsee and great amount of wonderful mods hitting the game. At the same time, the amount of botting, duping, cheating and hacking will rise significantly as well. It's a 2 headed beast.

^ This, thank you, your opinion is much appreciated.
I think a lot of what made Diablo 2 so much fun is partly because of the mods. That's why I was wondering, but I can see how it could cause problems for devs and the game in general.

Mods will definitely not be allowed. The centralized server architecture means that everyone needs to be playing the same version of the game. Even if PoE had a more distributed server architecture (like an fps or something) that could handle mods, they still wouldn't be allowed. As others have already said, letting in mods also lets in bots and hacks and all sorts of other nasty things that would very quickly ruin the game.

That basically leaves minor clients side mods like custom skins or models. These definitely won't be allowed either because GGG is going to be funding the game entirely by selling new skins and models. It'd be pretty foolish to let modders do for free what GGG is trying to sell.

So in all cases, no, mods will not be allowed.

You all missed one important piece of information here.

Namely, there will be different leagues, you can pay for private leagues, what's to say you couldn't have your own league using a mod of some kind for some custom game-play that won't in any way be connected to the official leagues.
Walking the path since August 20th 2011.
So, mods changing in-game items, textures, and areas are out of the question and it is understandable. And yes, as Drudley said, leagues are, basically mods, and the game is customizable enough as it is, what with the enormous skill system.

The thing is, though, that mods increase the life span of a game, content-wise. Of course, developer content is the norm for online games, and that makes complete sense, but we have to trust that GGG have a long slew of content planned post-release.

While there is no reason to doubt that, it will be a crucial part of the experience, overall. End-game content, to be precise and the fact that GGG will be focused on that gives me hope that the game will prove fun even after reaching the level cap. So there might really be no need for mods.

However, there is something overlooked. What about UI mods?

These aren't the greatest addition to a game, but they would be welcome, and I don't, personally, see how they could negatively affect gameplay, in such a way to damage either the developers or the community.

I don't believe UI modifications can be sold via micro-transactions. I haven't heard about this happening... anywhere. It would be weird, not in bad way, but it would definitely be uncommon.

I hope not becusse of the possablity of cheating
Changing how things look -> textures and ui mods
will probably be allowed since it doesn't make any impact on the game.
Creating mods which change/add content is different since it allows people to change things in the game and thus helping botters/hackers.

If this was Diablo 2 I'd say hell yeah mods! but in this case I don't really care since u will be able to play the different leagues which makes the life span of the game longer. Can't say much about custom leagues atm since u don't know what level of customization it will have.

Another thing is that this is an online game.
The difference between most offline games and full online games is that online games get content updates next to the regular patch fixes.
Offline games mostly do this by making an expansion pack/DLC(downloadable content) which most of the time is rather small and dissappointing (to me anyways)

could be a great option for the plan to allow people to have private leagues, let them mod their league too.
