Fire damage can be resisted. Physical damage cant.
It isn't that easy. Physical damage is reduced by armour by fixed value but elemental is reduced by X per cent reduction.
Elemental damage always do some damage but physical can be reduced to ZERO. That is why fast attacking with multistrike, mele splash + similar things is better for ele builds.
Monster armour is miniscule and does not reduce physical damage by much.

Im not sure about the new avatar of fire. It seems like burning discharge got a massive buff, and few other builds can really take advantage of it.
Possible 100% physical conversion to fire (with blackgleam or using infernal blow) is huge if you consider the templar WED nodes and the lava lash node + WED support gem
Fire damage can be resisted. Physical damage cant. Fire damage cant leech (except of special support gem). Physical damage can leech via item properties.
I see no reason, why fire damage would be better, all those crappy elemental passives and burn usually even dont cover damage loss from resistances! You need to make "one big hit" to make burn work well, but that better be performed with spells or abilities like Exposive Arrow.
On the other hand physical damage reduction can't go below 0% while fire resistance can.
I think I will try to build a fire equivalent to my 2-hand cold damage Templar on release :-)

Because theres a picture of the Avatar of Fire keystone from the release passive tree lurking out there now.

AS others said fire res can go below 0 and you can really effectively use both physical melee damage and WED support, for 2 more modifiers...
And back in the days when AoF was 100% conversion - you only had to take the templar wed nodes and lava lash and you had enough damage for the endgame with only 4 offensive nodes...
Believe me, there was a reason it was removed, and didn't came back for over a year.
EDIT: imagine your standart physical build - how much DPS do you have? (and many people already use LL even with a pure physical setup). A lvl 20 WED gem is 80% more (melee physical is a HUGE boost, but in the end "only" 49% more on lvl 20 - and together you can get 129%)

So that means it's okay to necro a thread? lol

My 46k DPS Physical Cleave build uses 3 more damage modifiers. WED, APD, and Concentrated Effect.
What is so wrong about using more than one?

To be fair back then those nodes were far stronger and incoming damage was lower, so the loss of cold resistance didn't matter as much as it would today.

The nodes were stronger, yes. But since this AoF doesn't give 100% conversion anymore i would guess that it would still be insanely powerfull, now you have to use e.g. IB for 100% (which is another balance factor of course).

We shouldn't forget that AoF can still change, it may look different from how the leak has shown it.
This being said I like the 50% all conversion quite a bit, it could open up a variety of new builds without being too strng.

Yeah i agree the leaked one seems (already) more balanced than the old one and it seems definatly far more interesting :)
