A Community Almost Completely Devoid of Sympathy and Empathy

I hope you start looking at him instead of fighting counter-argument points people trying to achieve (and throwing away) for your eyes.

He has a legitimate argument in a way.

I never argued he doesn't have a point to make.

Just that it is formulated as poorly as people saying "git gud".

For example, let's assume roughly 5% of the community participates on the forums and of that 5% only 0,5% actually behaves toxic.
(toxic defined as = deliberately propagating mallicious intend onto others)

Which is probably about right from my experience being active on these boards for seven years.

His statement is poorly formulated and missrepresents reality in a frauduleus manner to serve his argument, while at the same time "rightfully" pissing of a lot of the community members that don't partake in this toxic behavior since they are being grouped in.(ironically the OP is being toxic towards the community as a whole, go figure?)

I don't understand the notion where he expected people to come sing "kumbaya my lord" in harmony while praising his infantile observation.
And i call it infantile not to be derogatory but because it lacks nuance and is a first grade observation generalized to an extent which i would credit a child with.

Don't expect people to respond well when you make an observation of that kind which slanders something they enjoy(this community) with the effort being presented in this OP.
I personally expect either

1) more then five minutes of thought on a subject before posting
2) the capability to take in criticism of your idea put forward in the absence of 1)

In the absence of either i have empathy with the kernel of truth behind his observation but not with its presentation or the OP himself.

Peace,

Welcome to the internet, babe.
Kumbaya your lord.

Sorry for his "kumbaya" tuning. His music was too good to ask for a correct tuning.

I always tell everyone I know who asks about this game:

Although I do enjoy it "most" of the time, and probably play it to much, it does have issues. And one of them is the Path of Exile community is one of the most elitist I have ever encountered.

Reddit, here on the forums, it's just as the OP said. Everyday, someone says they dislike something, or don't understand something, and it's like others feel they are being personally attacked and absolutely just crap all over the OP. It's so much worse than any gaming (or non-gaming) community I have been a part of.

Some of you all really need to just freaking chill.
Unfortunately it is not just here. It is pretty common on many "community" sites. People get defensive about their position and if you post something they do not like, many tend to try and tear your position down and not always in a nice way.

I have run large gaming forums, in the past, and no matter what kind of guidelines etc, you have it will always have too many toxic posters. People get brave behind a keyboard. Personally I really don't think much of it when I am personally attacked as I know that they are the idiots in that case, as only idiots fall back to personal attacks when they have a weak argument.

Anyway, the forums and Reddit can be tough. However there are good people posting and replying as well. Unfortunately the toxic minority tend to be the loudest.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Gonna try and make this the end of the road for me. We get to see just how addicted I am.

Since replies will no doubt just be a bunch of scammers defending scamming. I've turned them off.

Probably no point to posting this. Definitely not gonna set notify for replies.

Hi, I'm going to shout into the void then preemptively ignore all the responses and go on with life thinking that I'm 100% always right and everyone else is crap, and I hate you all, but I have the desire for social interaction, except not with any of you because you're horrible, also I like run-on sentences, so you'll all just have to deal with that because I'm muting this so you can't tell me that run-on sentences are cancer.

Bye-eeee!

This is some context. This is the original post and my response. Granted, it was not the most mature way to respond. It was sarcastic, but at the same time, try telling me the original post wasn't entirely snarky and antagonizing as well.

Those three quotes pulled without context don't do anything justice. Should I have gone with a more direct approach or completely ignored the OP? Probably. But after scanning through dozens of posts that are the same "I had a bad time, but you're all mean so f you in advance" style rants...I just broke.

If I could go back, would I have just not replied? Probably.

Do I have any empathy for someone that comes on and posts in such a snarky, demeaning way? Nah.

But the point has been made. Stay on the forum long enough and you'll see enough of the same type of rant-post that you just get tired of it and you want to lash out.

Posting quotes like the OP did and then passing judgement on them without context is childish and i assume most people realize that perfectly well.

It's like taking a picture of your wife in the morning on a bad hairday, posting it online with the scrible under it "this is how my wife looks".

It's infactual and sure to project ire on yourself without much sympathy.

Peace,

Do you think that because I am unwilling to demonstrate a kind tone in my rhetoric that it somehow discredits my thread? I don't give a crap what you think about my rhetoric. Whether or not you acknowledge a toxic community, that's what I care about.

Pretty awesome if you ask me. I don't think this forum lacks sympathy or empathy... it lacks patience lol. We ain't got time to worry 'bout no damn emotions! LOL. Tell it like it is and move on.

You want candy coating go to reddit and make a post. You want a bunch of old vets tellin you youngins' to toughen up and grow a pair then welcome to the forums!

To be fair, POE isn't a children's game that is targeted at players with emotional immaturity. There is no voice inflection on responses written in a forum. Some fine lines of "dry sarcastic old man" and "rude asshole" are bound to be crossed.

You have people that create threads about "this game sucks because one shots"... then you look at their character and they are playing a level 92 character with 4k life. When you try to explain that their character lacks defense, they attack you as some kind of know-it-all.

People who dish it have to be able to take it. If you bring toxicity or wild over-reaching claims, people will shut that shit down with toxicity as well.

No forum is a daycare where we care about people's emotional spectrum. Fuck that.. you bring heat you get heat back. It's simple.
you bring heat you get heat back. It's simple.[/quote]

Fair enough. but what is a turn-off is when someone posts an inane but innocent or naive questions/comment and then proceeds to get flamed and ridiculed by all the regulars.

Good day? You're the problem, and you are exactly the sort of person that proves my post's validity.

Problem? If criticism in a debate forum is "toxic", I think you have the wrong idea. Criticism is what's SUPPOSED to be going on here, to create debates. If you seriously get offended by valid, constructive criticism, you don't belong on the internet, dude.

Toxicity, personal attacks and other forms of idiocy on the other hand, don't belong anywhere. But criticism isn't in the same category. At all.
Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.
