Does anyone else strictly do their own builds?
Playing since around harbinger and i have never played any meta build or any other peoples builds. Always make my own builds, mostly melee.
Every league the non-meta builds become less and less effective and im slowly forced to build my builds towards the cookie cutter meta skeleton template. The moment overall content requires literally 1m+ dps as bare minimum, i'll prolly just quit PoE alltogether. Which seems not so far away, unless PoE 2 is gonna have fundamentally different design philosophy. In other words players slowly loose more and more freedom of how they play and soon all are forced to play as whatever Chris decides. Last edited by Pikameowwoof#5302 on Dec 18, 2019, 2:53:05 AM

" Well put. Design philosophy is indeed at the root of this issue, as is business philosophy, and the way the two interact. The interactions are often less than harmonious, but I for one don't think that this has to be the case. I suppose it just seems safer profit-wise to GGG to let it be so. They are no longer pioneers. The 2nd build I ever had I was following a guide for. Have been doing my own builds ever since. I play almost exclusively melee, mostly because I just can't stand the majority of other archetypes.
I tend to gravitate towards poison buulds more than any other build type, and ever since the great gutting of ailments (the removal of double dipping), there were no nerfs. I make dumb builds, therefore I am.

" How exactly is this “forcing” happening? Is Chris locking your account out of certain classes and skills? No... so it really is YOU choosing to “force” yourself to play meta builds. Almost every time someone makes the same tired argument you do, it is because of some unrealistic expectation they have about how PoE should be played. If you feel “forced, it is because you want to accomplish something your current skill level won’t allow and you need some excuse to salve your ego. |

" Right. And people aren't forced to use Stygian Vises either. They could use a Cloth Belt instead. Or any other rare belt, for that matter. But they usually choose not to, because they "want to accomplish something their current skill level won't [otherwise] allow and they need some excuse to salve their ego." See, almost every time someone makes the same tired argument you do, it is because they fail to recognize that the deterioration of meaningful choices weakens the game for everyone, regardless of whether they are "elite" or "casual" or anywhere else in between. Yea I do my own thing most leagues, poe.ninja is a source of inspiration though.

If you put on your full plate mail, and I throw hundreds of toothpicks at you, you'll basically not feel it. If someone catapults a whole tree at you, don't expect the Armour to prevent as much of the damage. |

loads of people do, once you know how to make a build though people often arrive at all the same conclusions, I have a joke with my friends that Mathil has a direct link to my PoB because he's always playing what i've got saved in there but really its because when you see the new/reworked skills and uniques everyone who is experienced at making builds arrives at similar conclusions.
So basically yes, but often their own builds are actually the same :D |

Every time I opened a build guide, I was thinking "Wow, this sucks".
Forcing the traits a bit there, but there is enough variety in the game that everyone should probably at least adapt their build to suit their taste. Also, making a viable build has not been very hard for several years now. We are far from beta where 1 random white skelly would hack 1/3 of your life away in one hit before maps :D |

i've only played variations of my own sunder build for years. different leagues i use different weapons, different element, different ancestry, etc. but always sunder. its my favorite skill in the game. i dont care when its "strong" or "weak" i just like it.
bring back the state of the game in 1.3 vaults of atziri patch

I follow guides, but I'm picky. I've only used 4 or less total guides.
I don't have the time, the patience or the game knowledge to create my own build. Also I couldn't care less about what is the current Meta, I play what I enjoy. Are there a lot of bad guides? Yes but there are also a lot of really good ones. |
