But does anyone have any experience using an M.2 playing PoE? Just ordered myself a 1TB M.2 disk, and wondering if I can expect some improvements in loading times etc?

Going from sata to m.2 is very little difference because the random read (4k) performance difference between these types of drives is relatively small in comparison to the huge difference in sequential speeds. Sequential speeds are not important for PoE load times, only random speed. The interface is not the bottleneck for random reads or writes, but despite that a good m.2 might load marginally faster, only because they typically have a more premium controller (the "CPU" of the SSD) as would be required of a drive with higher peak speeds. It's not a very big difference though, while you may be getting speeds as much as 400% higher than your sata ssd for sequential i/o operations, 4k random speed will be maybe 20% to 60% higher tops. I would not expect this to translate into 20%/60% faster loads, either, it's probably barely going to be noticeable.
If you are coming from hdd it is an entirely different story. the long and short of it is no, it is not worth going from a sata ssd to an m.2 for poe. Last edited by Gutterflower#5744 on Dec 1, 2019, 9:14:34 AM

I use this myself.
 I felt the difference instantly. I barely have a loading screen. If you are considering it, i highly recomend it. Keep in mind that it is only NVME that is faster than a SSD. Other M2 cards are as fast as a SSD, and you need a motherboard that can make use of the NVME technology. As an excample comparing a regular samsung SSD with a samsung NVME m2 Samsung SSD 850 EVO Sequential Read: Max. 540 MB/s Sequential Write: Max. 520 MB/s Samsung NVME m2 970 pro Sequential Read: Max. 3400 MB/s Sequential Write: Max. 2700 MB/s Last edited by Anubis2108#3783 on Dec 1, 2019, 9:27:45 AM

I buyed this 1-2 months ago together with a ryzen 5 3600 because my performance got quite worse with an i7 2700k:
 Corsair Force MP510 960 GB with 3,480 MB/s. I noticed much better performance in poe, but this is more because of the new CPU and not because of the better SSD compared to my other sdd(Samsung 840 Pro). |
