PoE should look at D2 Median XL as an example for reasons to kill bosses

These (quite serious) problems with balance are years old now, with virtually no action taken. Why expect change now?

There is at least one thing at the moment : the ridiculously low player count at the moment.

But I agree, I find it quite stunning that GGG is still following the clear speed road, have apparently abandonned balance, and still seem to think that it's a sustainable design ...
SSF is not and will never be a standard for balance, it is not for people entitled to getting more without trading.

I didn't realize the player count was so low.

I realized today ( I made a thread in general about it ), we just had an average of 10,717 players on steam for the past .... 30 days, it had not been that low since two years ago, and there are twice many more players for releases now.

It was kind of surprised to be honest.

It's a damning statistic for sure... for anyone who takes pride in the game per se. But we know better by now.

Since Chris appears to be first and foremost a businessman, the MTX/League sell rate (regardless of player retention during the league itself) is probably the only thing that matters anymore. Only if that drops in 3.8 will they sit up and take notice.

...Unless they decide to take some tactical risks, and improve the game itself without any statistical data ensuring it will lead to higher profits. That would be a leap of faith, and I personally (as a manager) would choose to take it, due to the positive impact it would have on team morale.

Because people like to take pride in their own work.

Time will tell.

That is likely something like this indeed.

I cannot think of it as good for the game on the long term, neither good for GGG on the long term unless they start designing a successor to PoE very soon ( given the conference that Chris gave on how PoE was designed to be played forever ... ).

So many people answer without knowing/playing median xl is at least pathetic.

@OP to respond to your points

Playing median xl for a while now, and i fell in love with diablo actually again, started it out of nostalgia stayed cause of the gameplay. Now im playing a summon barbarian 127lvl i think and ive done all possible content for my level alone except from baal in hell which for some reason is not doable with the gear/stats i have.

I wont speak about the charm and bosses in poe dropping something similar, cause that can be done even without reworking the bosses too, or even leave them as their are and have like 0.5% chance to drop the charm and 0.0001 chance to drop the trophy.

What ill point out is the different speed and playstyle. In median xl the playstyle, the overal pace of the game and the clear speed are not even close to poe, its closer to act4 poe (when it was firstly indroduced) if not even before. That makes it so that the boss fights seem logical, oh it took me 20minutes to clear teganze, and the boss took me 2minutes of fighting seems logical to the playstyle and the flow of the game.

Now imagine a player in poe zoom-zooming through a map in what like 2minutes? Taking that much time for the boss is talking crazy, look at kitava variants through maps and people's comments of how slow and boring those fights are. And with the continuous power creep this getting worse and worse. Can you imagine kitava in act10 taking as much time as baal takes in hell? we talk about at least 10minutes fight with gg gear. Or Belial etc... Maybe once, after that everyone will throw stones to TencentGGG cause they are addicted to extreme speeds.

PoE today caters to instant gratification and speed junkies its a totally different game in so many levels than median, that it would be highly unlikely we ever get more similarities.

As for the charms, knowing TencentGGG it would probably be like i mentioned above, 0.5% and 0.0001% respectively so that people run and run and run and run for the carrot and not because they enjoy it, which is another big difference with median, i still do k3k runs cause i enjoy the area the layout not even picking up runes and sets just for the fun of it i like some areas.

I played Median XL for about 300 hours, give or take. (D2 for thousands.) I stopped playing largely because the forum for it was so toxic (everyone following the example of Laz, who treated people like shit because it was "cool," so everyone else thought it was "cool").

And I've played PoE for, um, a little bit more than that.

Here's my take: ARPG fans are addicted to perceived profit, not speed. If this game were tweaked such that a snail's pace were rewarded more than zoom-zoom-zoom, we'd see people like I_NO creating turtle builds and trolling threads advocating that GGG speed up the game, instead of the other way round.

In short, most PoE players are slaves. Not slaves to their own desires but slaves to GGG's design decisions. A controversial statement to be sure, but it comes with very very very obvious ramifications: GGG could make a conscious choice to make a better game (at any pace of play) and the addicts would remain just as addicted.

So why not do so? If creating boss-specific loot is better for the game per se, then do it. If slowing down boss kills by actually balancing the game's skills' relative damage improves the overall game, then do it. If making maps take twice as long to complete by removing the "I win-button" FOTM builds, or not creating such bullshit in the first place, then do it.

So why not? Why not make PoE a superior game? It may create drama in the short run, but it will not decrease profits in the long run. Players are not necessarily addicted to zoom-zoom gameplay itself.

Last time i played median was either last summer or the one before. Getting to lvl121 was really hard and farming a 6xis runeword was really boring.

Not sure how it changed since then, but i remember a max block+ regen boss that literally took no dmg at all, even with min maxed gear. Then a series of bosses in the maggot lair that were always immune to at least two damage types, requiring of you to change your build as well as have spare items for the build you are changing into in order to beat them.

It didn't seem very balanced to me. But yea the boss killing was slow but worth it.

I don't remember the rest of the mobs to be slow to kill though.
I'm a forum warrior, i was born to post, raised to defend my league. Now my post has been removed, chained and exiled by mods who Ban. Ban is my brother; i do not fear it. I see it in the eyes of men and beasts that i troll. It will take me to play the actual game when i am ready and i am not ready.
