The Celestial Lightning Trap Effect - The Apocalypse Mystery Box Returns

Celestial is fast becoming synonymous with 'quick, dirty and easy mtx creation'. Lacking in substance and value. i.e. 'quick, dirty and easy'.

Potentially somewhat justified, but damn that's cynical.

Celestial has probably simply proven itself one of the most popular themes they've come up with. I know I really love it at times for certain characters. But it's always a shame to really love a theme and not have a skill you want to use 'fit' with it. GGG taking the most popular theme and gradually adding as many skills to it as they can makes a good deal of sense. I don't really see a problem with that.

I've been honing my cynicism for decades. :)

But yeah, I stand by the sentiment. I had a long critical response to the other recent celestial offering but decided to let it slide, given it inspired me to make a non-celestial leap slammer. But two in a row? Bleargh. There are SO many skills that could do with more tastefully-done mtxes. We've come a long way from dragonheaded fireballs and flying frozen fish ice spears, but there's a certain point where an mtx overshadows a skill's core identity. If it's called 'lightning trap', FFS, let it at least look slightly like lightning. If it's called 'leap slam', let there be some semblance of a leap and a slam rather than a 'blink and a warp'. I'm not saying these aren't creative. They're just uninspired and inappropriate.

I'd pay *more* for a simple recolour skill, armour or portal mtx than most of these overwrought messes. Not even kidding.
Tower defence gimmick? Nope.
Main NPC with a name straight out of Diablo? Double nope.
Other games far more worthy of my time and attention? That's three strikes and yer out.

See you in 3.9.

Huge problem here is that the infrastructure apparently doesn't exist, or they're too stubborn (hello, Purple Arc), that catch-all simple recolors can't just be sold like, say, Warframe. Fact is, they can, they're just doing what they're doing... here... instead. For the many F2P trappings PoE gets right, this and the outlandish individual MTX costs it certainly gets way, way wrong.
No fun allowed.™

*emphatic nod* MM! I remember when 'dyes' were pretty close to the top of the list of likely mtxes once PoE got out of Closed Beta, but as you said, they probably never figured out the infrastructure to make that work. And by the time they'd started releasing recolours (alabaster seraph, obsidian seraph, etc), they probably realised there's better money in that.

And I don't mind that at all. I take absolutely no umbrage at being sold recolours if they're fairly priced. I suspect others might, and they'd perceive too many recolours as nickel-and-diming (when what TencentGGG usually do is closer to quarter-and-bucking, relatively speaking). So instead TencentGGG opt for these seemingly high-effort mtxes that reek of trying too damn hard at the design level and not hard enough at the implementation level.

What's really sad is they wouldn't have made that call if it couldn't be illustrated internally as cost-effective and profitable. You can connect the dots from there, I'm sure.

Sigh, another one that looks great but having to buy an MTX for each individual skill is really expensive and feels like the the value is really overstated. I don't even really think about buying any other skill MTX besides the ones for the heralds as they are the only ones that feel like they have some value because they can be used with multiple skills and builds.

I realize I have no understanding of cost to value on this or what it takes to really make these things but I'm going to offer a suggestion anyway.

Consider making a theme and have it usable on several skills as one MTX. Charge a bit higher price, sure, but with acknowledgement that you may be adding more skills to it later on. As you add more skills, every so often, re-evaluate the value and charge more for new customers while grandfathering the MTX for those who already purchased it. Again, I admit I don't know if that is truly a feasible idea but I can tell you that I and some others I've played with are starting to feel like this is getting ridiculous with the amount coming out and how each one has to be purchased individually. It's really just starting to turn us off the game.
I hate you Peeps at GG every build i make a week later you release a Celestial MTX for the Skills i am Using, Forcing me to Spend money should be a Sin, i am Truly Innocent in this instance.

I'm so sick of Celestial MTX at this point. Actually, I was sick of it about a year ago, but it's so prevalent at this point that I really want to see other themes explored. We've gotten - no joke - eight Celestial MTX within the past month alone.

Whatever happened to the Stygian MTX? Abyssal? Phantasm? Ghostflame? What if we tried something like Chrome/Mercury-themed MTX, ala chrome mobs/Daresso's Devotion footprints? Heck, I totally expected a slew of ghostly MTX somewhere during Betrayal league. Yet it never came. Imagine if we could recolor our spells to look like Catarina's.

They probably wouldn't sell like Celestial. Cosmic purple is all the rage right now, it seems.
