Summoner, partying, and end game farming.
Hi all.
I'm curious about how acceptable it is for a summoner to party? Or is this considered taboo? I'm about to close out cruel and have yet to join a party. But I keep reading about end game farming; better drops/exp in a party as well safety in numbers. Looking for other people's opinions and experiences on the matter. Is solo summoner viable for end game? Are they accepted in parties if I want to go that route? |

Solo Summoner is viable in end game as long as you don't get hit too often, because you're likely going to die due to needing so many passives for minions. Just hang back and support your minion hoard and you'll be fine.
Typically, people do not like to party with summoners because the 20+ minions can create a good bit of lag and screen clutter. For example, a melee character wouldn't party with a summoner because it would be difficult for them to pick out the enemies they're trying to target since they're surrounded by a dozen minions. Same goes for ranged characters who are trying to single-target down an enemy. summoner as a class not viable for end game.
Sure, you will be able to clear maps, but it will take hours to do so. While most other classes can do a map in 10-15 minutes. Playing as a summoner is nice is you want to experience the game fully. Slowly killing mobs, watching your zombies tear them apart piece by piece. But it is very long... I play as a summoner, and the only thing they are good for is loading a bunch of MF on them and go to party with friends for MF farming (current culling zombies got 57%/445% MF). Solo - summoner is crap. In a party - auras make it impossible to see anything, so summoners are not welcome in groups. Even i personally dont like when my 8 zombies and 12 skellies have 7 auras each and run around the screen. Then add some hexes on top of them, mobs with hexes, and freeze pulse/arrows flying around the screen... Waiting for GGG to improve minions, right now zombies are like headless chickens, run around trying to avoid mobs. hope it helps. |

" I don't agree with the above. I had a level 70 summoner in CB and he destroyed things quite well. The only maps I avoided were the ones with constant damage, burning patches of ground, etc. I would like to see the minion AI improved (don't stand in the fire!), but summoners are far from crap. In a very grind heavy game the death penalty equates to...more grinding.

hmm, i'm loving my summoner so far, my primary complaint is the usual...
mindless undead are dumb. i know, i know, mindless. but they wander off, stand in fire, walk away from monsters beating on them. that's generally-speaking not very helpful. as far as "slow", beg to differ. <3 GGG. <3 GGG.

" In CB summoners were much better than in OB. First of all they nerfed minions damage. By a lot. Well, that basically the only thing, by halfing the damage effectively doubles the clearing time for maps. And the longest and most annoying thing is trying to get your zombies to go towards mobs. about 2/3 of map clearing time is clicking/hexing on mobs and hoping zombies follow. OB is not CB, in CB summoners were much better. In CB it was possible to hex mobs and minions would go there and kill hexed mob. Now even constant casting does not guarantee minions will go there. Summoner potential can be the most fun class to play in PoE. Who doesnt want to control an army of minions. But currently some archer build or a cold-crit witch can clear anything much faster and easier than any summoner. Dont want to offend any minion-lovers out there... |

I have to agree that summoners are quite a bit worse in OB. I haven't touched mine in awhile.

Not sure if that guy has seen 4 flame sentinels with a 6l going at it. On an open field map I just basically walk around and collect loot that drops. Ignore stuff except for the boss because it is immediately tanked for 10 zombies and burned so fast that it doesn't even matter.
Closed area maps are a little harder but not by much. The mobs group up in the door and get burned even faster. You just have to watch for flanking monsters as they will get your specters or you. |
