Philosophy in a "closed" beta.Thoughts.
On this I´m with mooks. Yes it is good for GGG to have some donations yes of course but thats not the true concept of closed beta. A closed beta is a group of players testing the game for bugs and so on. To test if the games is functional. With this new system you will bring beta players not beta testers. I think its a risk for the game. This ppl will come here to play not to help you with the development. Sorry but in my country we use to say " Who ever wants everything ends up losing everything". It was fun thought GL GGG for this project

A product should be design in many ways, the choice of the way is the creators decision, how the product should be shown to the target is also their decision.
I wasn´t questioning profit.Profit is not a question of how much have been made but on how much can be made. But that wasn´t my question at all. As a potential customer im concerned about banalizing the image of a product that doesnt suit for that unique piece. |

" If I'm reading you and Fallenonne correctly, you feel that by 'expanding' the player base of the closed beta from, say, 300 people at a time to 1200 if not more, that this will cheapen the experience because it's no longer a 'closed testing environment'. They were already giving away a key *every five minutes*. Do not mistake 'closed beta' for 'alpha.' Even the Diablo 2 closed beta was less about 'testing the game' and more about 'oooh wow, this is FUN' and reporting any bugs or feedback you might have. You were not obliged to do so. Right now, I'm willing to bet the opening-up of the closed beta is more of a server test than anything. And only a few (but very major) crucial things are keeping this game out of Open Beta: the sixth class and Act 3. So yeah, you really can't call it a 'closed beta' anymore, but it's not really 'open' either, since 'open beta' is basically release for a f2p game. ...I view myself as a beta player, not a beta tester. I think I made that clear before. I have given feedback but it was feedback based on what I experienced while playing, not feedback I went into the game looking to find. ...And not to be obvious, but my being a beta player, not necessarily a tester, has been a good thing for Path of Exile and Grinding Gear Games. 'banalize the image of a product'...by letting more people in, people who really wanted to get in? People who clearly care and will give feedback, likely much in the same way as I have? ...Really? If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.
I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period. |

" I understand his point. Most of the people that pay now are ppl that are freaking needind to play. As we all know ppl get tired of playing the same game over and over. Since there's repetition on this game ( cause of the dificulty levels ) . It makes it highly probable that people will suffer burn out from overplaying, thus making a lower player launch. I think he's talking about 2 things , burn out from overplaying a game , and cutting down the hype. At this point there is a enormous hype to get into PoE, all my friends want it , and it's kinda hard to get, when they do they'll probably support the game. But if they pay , they'r not gona test the game, most of them would test if they felt like it was hard to get it , now there is no more hype since it's easy to get a key. Overplaying means players may be tired and don't want to play the game all over again in the release. Hype cut down means less players in the actual release, since there is no PoE hype. ( cause now it's a really "elite" kind of thing , lots of ppl want it and don't even know why ) Well I think in the end it's for the best since it gets more $$$ in their pockets , but I do think the " getting more ppl that give good feedback " isn't actually true . In my personal opinion the feedback from ppl that buy the key will be worse than ppl that actually lurked the forums waiting for a beta. But again , in the end it gets $$$ into GGG . And I certainly don't think it's bad to give money to a company that made such a great game. So keep on making more $$$ !!! I really wish GGG and all it's "crew" a happy journey and good luck in every project that they have ( not that they need it ) Last edited by FindM#3037 on Apr 5, 2012, 11:38:29 AM

If you think PoE can't retain its playerbase, it may be a problem...
Because the game is free to play, if they stop playing the game because it's boring, they will most likely not buy anything. LoL is free to play, there's only one map, but over 90 champions. Each match is different, and that's what keeps people playing this game and purchase stuff. PoE forums ignore list script: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/162657 0.4: added "ignore" button. ignore list is now saved locally. Last edited by kodr#0209 on Apr 5, 2012, 11:41:53 AM

I see it basically the same as people donating money for Kick starter projects. That is basically what it is. I have no problem supporting a company that seems to be doing it the right way, and has a great product as well. Some people just want something for nothing, something not too uncommon now here in America :).

If a player will "burn out" until the game will evolve in open beta, it means he wasn't enough cathed by PoE and he would "burn out" after open beta phase too. It means PoE is not for him.
There are many players and many posts in forum stating that the game even in this, unfinished form, is something they dreamed about since they quit playing D2. If we played D2 for years, and this game brought back the old good fever of D2 play (one more quest to do, one more waypoint to reach, etc....before going to bed) why would we leave the game ? For sure there will be some who will quit after few months, but the majority of old D2 players and new "infested" players with ARPG virus will stay for years. Main reasons: -the game itself is exciting and extremly customisable with endless build variations, -a very professional and friendly developer team, in close touch with the player base (seriously, I never experienced something even close) -an ethousiast player base, great community. I wish all the best for the GGG, keep up the excelent work and for sure I will recomend the game to all of my gaming friends. |

Once again please dont misunderstand me.
I hope that GGG makes the profit they want. What i am concerned is with the image of the final product, and that can and will affect the profit, the image of the game when its released and the community that were not selected but bought. And that is exactly what you all defending, GGG taking profit for their work, without banalizing the image. |

I understand what most ppl are trying to say.
that you r worried that the game may end too early, as most players are already experience in-game. I recommend pm/message chris on finding a solution to it, instead of worrying. Provide solutions ppl, instead worrying. Anyway think about it.. they can start planning new ACTs 4, 5, 6 etc.. for future expanding. Those early $ comes in handy. BTW its already implemented. No turning back now. Lets go forward. Not backwards or halt at a spot. FYI: I think Chris have something up his sleeves. My guess is, that he bring forward some stuff only, and to test it. The micro-transaction thingy when released ran into problem, remember? oh yah, pls look at GGG website too. Look under "STAFF". read his BIO. and u will understand where he is coming from. Perm. Retired from this unforgiving land of the Exiles. Self-impost EXILED. Last edited by starsg#0408 on Apr 5, 2012, 12:46:13 PM
