Just enter/leave the boss arena and you get invul-time. Use that time.

edit:
Also try opening chat in /global 1 and enter "IDDQD" w/o quotes. It should help. Just don't forget to turn it off afterwards or it would be cheating.

I enjoy using IDSPISPOPD to get myself to hard tor each areas.

Topic also reminds me of my younger days playing Lineage ][ when Ma would kick the door in and tell me to "pause the game".

It reminds me more of doing tech support in the mid-90's. Back when people would legit call about their computer not turning on, only to find it wasn't plugged into the freakin wall or the power strip had been switched off. Or the little old ladies who would call to ask which key to press since their keyboard didn't have an any key and they didn't want to press the wrong thing. Or network engineers who would call with LAN connectivity issues and make sure you knew they were Very Qualified and Very Senior Engineers, only to find they apparently didn't know the difference between RJ11 and RJ45.
I have a pretty good sense of humor. I'm not German.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned that you can pause D3 in single player yet.

That brought a whole load of problems, I seem to remember Kripparian and others racing for first Diablo HC kill exploiting this by pausing the game if it looks they were going to die and logging into the game on a different PC which cleanly kicked them out with no chance of dying while disconnecting. Saying that, there's no real difference between doing that and using a logout macro so no big deal there really.

It's not really worth the effort to code around something which can be simply solved by portalling.

lol you think its crazy to pause when a menut covers the screen....really? man you guys are are just silly. but your right...how dare i try to read my options in a betrayal menu THAT COVERS THE WHOLE SCREEN...INSANITY LOL

i can see it not being doable, likely its not. but menus that cover the entire screen in a shaper and tempest map are a nightmare.....maybe dont make it COVER THE WHOLE DAMN SCREEN.

It would violate the existence of the current server/client model completely, OP. The server doesn't know when you're "in a menu", and GGG sure doesn't want you to be able to TELL the server you're "in a menu" because the ability to pause the game whenever you want would make this game so much easier than it currently is.

Would it be physically impossible to implement? No, for the instance server, you'd just implement it as taking the player out of the zone, thus deactivating all things that would normally be "active in your game radius"; it'd be the type of thing that's actually pretty easy to code. If your character itself wasn't actually removed from the instance, then there'd further be a way for you to "pause" your side of a map in a multiplayer instance if you're on the opposite side of a map as those you are partying with, but if they got too close to you, the monsters in *their* vicinity would be active and could still target (and kill) you. Lots of interesting but not too complex ways to code it.

But the issue is, it's just a terrible idea.

I can get behind making menus not take up the whole screen (betrayal definitely warrants a menuing change still), but any method that could trick the instance server into pausing the game for you (even in single player) is an awful, terrible idea.

It's an online multiplayer game, YOU CANNOT PAUSE THIS GAME.
That's like asking why you can't pause PuBG or Fortnite or CoD or World of Warcraft or any of the tens of thousands other online multiplayer games since the dawn of time.
If only there was a way to make sure you were safe before activating the menu. If only.....
Thanks for all the fish!
I mean Dark Souls doesn't really pause the game either

I'm more of an offensive player, so use "IDKFA" instead.
Sometimes, just sometimes, you should really consider adapting to the world, instead of demanding that the world adapts to you.
I prefer the no-pause option when you are in an instance.

Otherwise you could pause it anytime, including during a fight, to reassess.

I think the 'be alert at all times' attitude makes the game far more enjoyable than having the ability to pause it whenever I want.

Would lower my appreciating of the challenge and risk of being in an instance.

Nope, for me, pausing would just make the game easier.

And besides... when you play hardcore, and someone is just standing there, any experienced HC player would notice it, and go back to see if everything is ok with that player. It would be an unnecessary distraction in HC rest assured. But yea, I guess players could just say 'pause' to notify the group. But still... nope nope nope.
There's devils on each side of you with bottles in their hands.
You need one more drop of poison and you'll dream of foreign lands.
