Why doesnt the game pause while you are in a menu?

Online games do not pause, client has to keep up with the server.

dude.. wake up... read a bit what was said on previous pages.
this in not a MMO. it's a game based on instances. if you are alone in the instance, it can be paused no issue whatsoever (look at diablo 3 for example)

I don't really care anymore, it's not like this thread might affect how they feel about it. But instancing has nothing to do with an MMO.
I'm sure even WoW is set up so if 10,000 people decide to go to the same place at the same time it will create new instances for them. Oh yeah, Neverwinter too, that's most definitely an MMO, completely instanced. People referring to open world and massively multiplayer being the same thing is a big pet peeve of mine.

Edit: vvv It's not, that's why I started that saying I don't really care about that anymore.
Need a new signature, cuz name change. I dunno though. I guess this seems fine. Yeah, this is good.

so.. how is anything you said relevant for poe and the fact that ppl think "online games" can't be paused?
Yes, a pause would really be a welcome addition for solo instances, Warframe allows it and its also online-only title

QoL? Dont make me laugh. Go to Diablo 3 forum and ask why it doesnt have pause button as well.

it does PAUSE the game when you play solo and pop up the menu ;)

and it is an exclusive online game

so it can be done.

No, it doesn't pause when you open the menu.

But sure D3 does if you choose to play solo. I regularly use it. You know, when the bell rings and you are the only one available to open the door, when you feel the need to pee, when you are thirsty and you forgot to bring the water with you before starting the game, when you get a phone call while inmidst of a fight, ... so many reasons to want a break, thats what we call quality of life enhancement if the game offers it.

Read a couple of posts past the one you quoted. I wasn't referring to D3, but I accidentally quoted someone who was.

tl;dr nevermind my quoted text ;)
