Chris Wilson's 2019 gdc presentation - merge if already posted.
" Tencent is a highly successful company (in fact, moreso than pretty much all the others). They did not become a highly successful company by being stupid. Also, their track record (they own A LOT) is pretty hands off. In fact Chris even mentioned that as one of the reasons they decided it was okay to sell to them - whether you have faith in his ethics or not, he is right about that one. Tencent became successful because they are state sponsored, and once you reach a certain size that you may as well called critical mass it becomes extremely difficult to fail.
Like they aren't grossly incompetant but giving the leverage in the background it doesn't take a genius to get to the state they are at. They are very hands off though like you say, but I can't help but be a little suspicious of that, especially as they own a piece of like every major company on the planet. Might just be me being suspicious though ^^ Last edited by Draegnarrr#2823 on Apr 7, 2019, 2:53:27 PM

As others have observed Chris' talk goes from what's the best way to satisfy the player base to what's best to maximize the player base. Because this was a GDC talk the title should be "Game Designing For Maximizing Profits". Now I know that the goal of any company is to make the most money possible for the stockholders (namely Tencent, Chris, and Jonathan), but at the expense of making PoE a racer/shooter game is very sad. All Chris is concerned about in his talk was the goals necessary to maximize the player base. That thinking as I see it is twofold, if we have more players we have a larger market of mtx buyers, and 2nd, a larger player base is indicative of more player satisfaction (players must be good with the direction we are taking PoE otherwise our player numbers would be going down). There was very little attempt to analyze the player increases seen in Betrayal League as a direct result of Blizzard's failure to announce that D4 is coming soon and disenfranchised D3 players were scanning the game market for new ways to get their arpg fix.
Chris totally confirmed my thinking of late that GGG is no longer interested in making "the arpg we would most like to play" and more about just tapping into the larger racing/shooter market to maximize profits. The pro PoE streamers are all too happy to embrace this too if it means more followers thus more revenue for them. Another altruistic game developer succumbs to financial greed. Very sad. :( "You've got to grind, grind, grind at that grindstone..." Necessity may be the mother of invention, but poor QoP in PoE is the father of frustration. Chris impresses me everytime he talks.
He messed up the last question, he should of told the guy you can you use MTX on your new league chars. They arent stuck on a single char or standard |

" Yeah sure mr Prodigy. Just like Diablo 3 was completly dead after couple months, right? Its not like it took 8 years of completly wasteland for this game to "die". |

I watched the entire video yesterday...I thought that it was very illuminating. First off I appreciated his being open and forthcoming about the financial aspects of the game. Some of my small disagreements with how GGG acts/reacts can be better understood if one simply looks at the economics of the game and how GGG makes money.
Frankly, I could have a long post but there is no need - things are how they are. For me the game is good with the new skills and plenty to do. I can't say I'm thrilled with Synthesis mechanics but I was smart enough to not engage in the Chessboard for the first 3 weeks. Now it is fine although I have to admit that my enthusiasm for playing took a pretty big hit compared to if the league came out of the gate in good shape. |

Wahooo… I watched these bullocks too. Somebody mentioned, the speech was directed to potential investors, someone else to other developers. That's not true. The target recipient was only one – TENCENT. Probably in the contract in which Tencent bought the majority of shares in Great Garbage Games was a clause about buying the rest of shares in two years. At a price depending on current financial results and the number of active players. Wilson wants to sell the rest as high as possible, which is basically understandable, that's why he is currently carrying a monstrously aggressive, even reckless financial policy, trying to squeeze the last juices out of the players.
At the same time, he does not even try to fight bots, because these bots significantly increase the number of "active players" he will present to Tencent. Hence, all these nonsense about the game "played forever". Forever? Look, where is Roman Empire and Nokia now :P The game has 8-10 "leagues" ahead. Later it will fall under the weight of its own complexity, bugs impossible to solve and complete lack of optimization. Shit will fry even NASA's supercomputers. Poor, poor addicts. I hope they will find some other dope in the meantime:) |

" Sad to hear that 85% I believe the number was thats acceptable for a released league. So all the people asking for GGG to go slower etc aren't understanding that GGG doesnt care. I get you can't get 99-100% perfection but common, you brag about reusing content but 85% is acceptable. I get it that Chris is amazing, I really get the your a no one and you became someone but its like hes lowering his standards. I don't know, I'm off the rails blabbering, I just feel like its a huge lie. |

" This would be great news, china has so many good things we don't have. It's already a 2 class society with the superior chinese players and the western leftovers. Last edited by DasName#6192 on Apr 8, 2019, 4:08:26 AM
