Two things I take away from this speech are:

1. Everything we decide is done with the economy in mind.
2. Progression isn't meant to be linear in any way.

An interesting take on the Economy aspect is one thing i found about multiplayer vs single player games. That's the "social arena" component. In a nutshell trading is what makes you compare your findings with other people, how you get your items from other people, if you are richer/poorer etc. Exactly the reason why you think "how many chaos is this item worth" whenever you loot something.

In PvP the interaction is to obviously work together and murder the other team however since this is PvE i think GGG took full advantage here of their awesome currency/crafting system and that's what gives them an edge and makes the economy more engaging.

Also remember the part where he talks about "roles" or "specializing" in one task in the game. For example lab runner, bosskiller, delver etc. What is the link between all of them? The gear they farm and what they sell to others.

Just a theory anyway. It's a great system overall when he talks about it, however long time players like me know there are side effects to this.

I find it interesting how his talk goes from creating a great game to how to make the most money out of it at around 19 to 20 minutes in.

It was a single throw-away comment about monetizing his product.

"We monetize the game early in the league so it doesn't matter when participation drops off late, because the players come back for the next league, and we can re-monetize them then."

He was talking about that in the context of their shift to the consistent 13 week league cycle to maintain player interest and create growth. He doesn't go on and on about it, he goes right back to discussing GGG development cycle and player numbers. I'm only half way through so far but he hasn't mentioned making money again (~32 minutes in so far).

Edit: 45 minutes in, he still hasn't spoken about making money again.
Edit: 47 minutes in, he says players who aren't actively playing the league still buy supporter packs and how that motivates them to keep creating quality content. The formal talk is over the Q&A has started.
Edit: During the Q&A he jokes about selling beta access because people were threatening GGG because they didn't get beta access, and how that and Kickstarter inspired the creation of starter packs.

It's mostly about how to monetize the game and milk the players in the best way possible. He doesn't have to use any terminology that comprises the word money to do so.

I didn't say I find this bad, especially if - whilst being milked - I am entertained. In fact I think Chris deserves everything he achieved. He and his core team are really smart people - respect.

milked

Do you feel milked?

I don't. I've spent a lot on PoE through the years. And I haven't felt "milked" at all. Not even slightly forced, beside a tab or two. Have I felt encouraged? Sure. Has the MTX flood irritated me sometimes? Sure, but as long as they keep that flood to a minimum in-game, I don't mind too much. But how someone can feel "milked" in a F2P, non-P2W (let's not go into that discussion) is beyond me.

I feel using the word "milked" kind of takes away the players/consumers ability to think and make choices.

Every business in the world treat us like numbers and graphs when push comes to shove. Hell, even the glorified CDPR does it.

Does anyone know if they'll upload it on their YouTube later? I'd love to watch it with auto-genereated subs, since I'm missing some parts of Chris' speech.

As I understand it, not for a long time. This was released upon special request by Chris. Otherwise, recording is not permitted at GDC - only the organizers can record, and they only upload it several weeks later. So yes, you'll get to see on YT, but it'll be a long wait.

- Next league will be probably even worst than Synthesis, because GGG has to put lots of efforts to improve current league and this may impact the following one OR current bugs and annoying mechanics will never be removed, because it is high time to focus on the next league (and anyway - the current one has already lost more than 80% players but supporter packs were sold before that happened - so who cares!).

Incursion followed the disaster (far bigger than Synthesis) that was Bestiary, and Incursion was fine...

So as I said, the cold truth is this is ultimately about making money. It's about being successful. It's about hooking players and seeing them as a commodity, a resource in a larger picture. To simplify that perspective drastically, imagine being a game dev is itself a game, call it SimGame if you'd like. We the players would be represented in a corner of the screen by a little person icon, a number next to it and an emoticon denoting our overall feeling about the game. Big number+smiley face=more money every month to allocate to the game. This is a win. Small number+sad face=less money every month to allocate to the game. This is a loss. Various actions in SimGame affect this stat. Most drain your other resources, which can also result in a loss. Well, you've all played a resource-management game right? How often do you stop to worry about the feelings of the resources unless the direct result is a quantifiable win?

Heh, I just realised in such a game, streamers would have their own statistic because their satisfaction and engagement would modify the overall players'. Oh that's depressing, hahahaha.

We don't need to imagine any of that. There are actual games for that too :p -

The next announcement from Wilson will be these words:

You have phones exiles?

No. The next announcement will be:

"Rejoice, Tencent decided to invest a bit more and buy the remaining shares in GGG. I am proud to introduce the new president, Mr Lau Chi Ping. The next league will combine the Chinese and international version of PoE, thanks to which all players around the world will be able to enjoy the same great features."
You have been placed on probation for: ● Make hateful or needlessly negative comments ● Personally attack or cause harm to the reputation of others ● Antagonise others in an obnoxious manner ●
How you crate this you say ? ill tell you how.
First u make a game and trick a player base to think that you are decen and wanna create a nice game. In order to make people support you.
Then you turn around, sell the game.
And start releasing shit in order to milk it.

See how long ''forever'' lasts for you ggg, scumbags.

Uninstall btw, for the first time since 2013 ? 2014 ?

The Graphics are mediocre at FUCKING BEST.
The Optimization is Horrible.
The Animations in this game are from the 2001.
The servers are fucking garbage, disconects, random laggs and fps drops.

The only thing that kept this game around was the fucking community that supported you.
No idea how u failled to reallise this.
