Diablo style RPGs making a big comeback ?
" or you could download the demo and give it a try. ;) |

I wouldnt count KoA:Reckoning to be a valid Hack n Slash. it has too much good meant story and sidequests, tasks and more. I played that game up to level 32 so far, going for Blademaster Fate. It is not fast enough. The action is not constantly and so much story to clikc through is a whole big breaking sensation.
it feels to much of grinding worl to do and i got bored of this game. besides their crafting system is no good in my opinion. anyway, to answer your question i think not that thers a big comeback. over the years i played much such Action RPGs since D1 first entered this world of reality. There was the Titans series, Sacred and some more or less i dont remember yet besides Diablo Series i followed some years. it is still good to see that theres no end to this type of Games. PoE has some good ideas build into their charackter tree and skillsystem with those exp gaining skillgems. The Diablo series is going to the opposite direction. more to casual playing for fun. PoE insted instead goes the difficult path of new skillsystems, much stats on items and gems. which i think is a hell to balance out. So nothing will really get OP too fast. In a short words. No, theres no comeback but theres more people having the time and money to play more and especially action RPGs are often sought out for they seem so easy to play... but they are hard to master as we veterans of those games know. Die Nase ist der Bohrturm des kleinen Mannes! The nose is the oilrig for the poor man! hmm, not really working in english this one :D Last edited by EternalDenial#2146 on Mar 17, 2012, 4:44:24 PM

The only problem with all these great games coming out:
They are all coming out within months of one another. Unfortunately these types of games take time and commitment to master. I plan to play them all at some point, but I have my priorities. We could've used one last year for sure. Someone could have made tons of money in that year without much competition. What are all the game devs thinking? Its like mass war out here, and none of them are going to really win! |

" Grim Dawn won't be until end of the year at the earliest, more than likely next year. I don't think Torchlight 2 will see the light of day until 3rd quarter of this year. " Very true. " There was a decent one last year called DarkSpore but most people didn't even notice it. Maybe it was the space theme, the fact that EA pushed the release too soon so it wasn't fully cooked, or perhaps people thought it was just a 'Spore' game. Regardless, many people missed out on a challanging experience that was fun to play in groups. " Not if the game isn't ready and they release what could have been a great game before it was ready. See previously mentioned DarkSpore as a perfect example. " You already answered this with your 2nd statement. These games take time to do right. Diablo 3, PoE, and Grim Dawn have all been in the works for 5-10 years. They are releasing them when they feel they are ready, which is a good thing. " If the games are good, they'll win. All you have to do is look at how many new people have found and joined the PoE site in the past month or two to realize that a big time title such as D3 is exactly what this genre needs. D3 draws them in and then they go searching for similar games. FPS gamers usually play more than 1 FPS; RTS players usually play more than 1 RTS; RPG players usually play more than 1 RPG. Hack and Slash will be no different, we just haven't had that many options in the past. D3 will introduce a new generation to the hack and slash that PoE and Grim Dawn can benefit from. " ok, i did so :) it's not quite the right combination, because the character development is fixed by game mechanics (at least in the demo), since you cannot go back and level up as you feel like. also there's no vendors so far and no item drops (besides the fixed ones). however - it is a good game! combat is fluid, the narrator is an innovative idea and the different passive potions allow for tactical customization. i read that the story was good, too. think i'll get the full version. thanks for the tip ;) |

"i dont smash on games, i hate it. but im a huge dungeon siege fan and after trying DS3 demo for 30 minutes i realized not only was it complete donkey cheeze, not even the same game or play-style or even unique like gas powered is known for... but that i just plain wasnt having fun. canceled my months old reservation that week. lets hear it for failed company takovers (another exaple of complete fail on company takeover of a game is Alundra for playstation one. 2 was... cries* rip potential game sieries of awsome) sry to rant but bad game is bad How many arrows does it take to steal the sun?

The story behind Bastion was great, lovely ending too. First thing I thought when seeing this post was lineage eternal, someone already pointed that one out.
Return of Diablo style RPGs is a great thing in my opinion, because Diablo was the best of its genre for quite a while - it would be great to see some variety. |
