When helping with uber, were does the other character (n00b guy) has to be...at Hideout, or in the void just before the portal to uber, or in the fight?

what happens with portals in 'N00b guy' dies...does it eat up a portal for the other guy?

hope for reply, as I could need some help with this (I'm N00b), though my gear is really good, and dmg output is high...I can't get by Uberelder....I have tried 6 complete fragtments, but not even close to killing him.

I have no problems Guardians, and normal Elder and Shaper.
