I personnaly don't have problem with colors.

But, couldn't the socket/gem issue be 'solved' by using different shapes ? Like traffic light ?

Square (Red), Triangle (Blue) & Circle (Green).

I like the shape idea as well, you can also make the gems looks this way, so that color blind people don't have to mouse over their gem just to make sure what slot they can fit in. (Although you can tell whether a gem is red/green/blue from the stat req, some gems doesn't have stat req at level 1)

Although I would swap circle with oval, and let portal gem be circle so that it can be sockect'd into any shape.

Like this:
Spoiler

The white circle would the portal gem, while the different shapes are the sockets.

As for changing shape from chromatic orb:
"One thing most astonishing about these magical sockets is their ability to change shape according to their color. By discoloring the socket and applying a new one, one can see the socket re-shapes itself as if they were living being."

edit: support gems can have a hole in the middle to indicated has to be linked, and distinguish from skill gems.

I used the traffic light as an example for the shapes. I agree than an oval shape would look better than a simple circle.

That idea could be applied to both socket & gems. Even without the color, you could identify if you can use a gem for a given socket. I think it would be good even for people that are not 'color blind'.

In the end, the goal would be to have shapes that can be identified easily for anyone ... color blind or not.
I'd like to add my support for this as well. I struggle quite a bit to tell the red sockets from green, especially when they're empty.

While not ideal, even something as simple as adding the name of the color to the socket mouseover would help a lot.
In a very grind heavy game the death penalty equates to...more grinding.
I second this too. I'm just a little color blind but still think it's pretty hard!!
I agree on this issue.

For me(semi colourblind) gem colour is ok, but it takes time to id loot sockets (red-green). example; if i'm collecting items for Chromatic Orb recepie

Also gem shape idea is good.
I'm not colorblind but I'm having trouble with green vs. blue sockets, both on the item label and when I pick up the item. They are about the same color value and the texture on the sockets is not different enough to make it easy. A darker blue would help tremendously.
I like the shapes idea for the sockets/skills. I think it would also be easy to incorporate this into the ornamentation in pleasant by obvious way.

Other alternatives would be to add additional color information on the sockets (e.g., green is actually green+some blue), and you could also vary the brightness, so that to a color blind person, red gems/sockets would look (for instance) a little darker than green. For me, changing the brightness (or saturation) would be really handy for the small displays on dropped items.

I just showed PoE to my father (since he showed me Diablo I earlier :P), so that he has something to do after retirement. But he also has problems with red/green. An easy solution would be turning green into yellow, which is a lot easier to distingiush, since it is brighter (the actual color isn't that important, red-green blind people would see a dark, a medium and a bright gem :P).

A completly different coloring would help such people tremendously, since instead of different colors, they would need sharp contrasts in brightness.

I would suggest getting some of the affected people to work something out. It is really hard for people who see colors normally to come up with working solutions, since they don't know how things look for affected people.
+1

I have only just started playing POE, and as of thus far, it has been an amazingly fun experience, however being color blind, I have difficulty seeing the gem colors, as well as the zone doors vs. the ones that show you hallways in the interior dungeons. I think that by adding an overlay like people have already stated is a great idea, or even just a small graphical redesign of shape. Even making the zone exit a color with a contrasting border would be a vast improvement, seeing as the current system requires me to backtrack through a whole dungeon at times (even with the full map revealed) to find the door.

I do want to state, that this game is however, damn good, and I will continue to play regardless of the inconvenience. That beng said, a small change would really improve the POE experience for myself, and I'm sure many others as well!

well, I made this:

Sockets. You can add small icons like those on gems icons or re-design the shape of the gems themselves to be in proper shapes. I seriously cannot imagine a better way to this without involving letters.

hope this helps,

L.

PS. YES! :) I know one one should be blue, this I made only for illustration purpose.

sadly in the US, the traffic lights don't have different shapes, it's all about location, top is red, bottom is green, yellow in the middle. no other way to tell for those with red/green color blindness.
