The last time GGG drastically nerfed overall player power level their player retention after a week dropped like a rock.
Pretty sure they aren't doing that again.

well duh. the last time they said 'we arent afraid to nerf things' they nerfed things a bit and then effectively unnerfed it with ridiculous shaper/elder items.
now they are just straight up buffing ascendancies.
those times when they meticulously and mercilessly cut everything that stood out as more powerful, are long gone. sadly enough.

- The nerf to shotgunning didn't kill the game
- The nerf to Incinerate didn't kill the game
- The nerf to chaos conversion didn't kill the game
- The nerf to Vaal Spark didn't kill the game
- The nerf to CoC/Mjölner didn't kill the game
- The nerf to crit multi didn't kill the game
- The nerf to Frost Wall didn't kill the game
- The nerf to AoE didn't kill the game
- The nerf to double dipping didn't kill the game
- The nerf to VP didn't kill the game
- The nerf to ES didn't kill the game
But it did kill build diversity, which is what this game prides itself on compared to most ARPGs.
PoE players: Our game has a wide diversity of builds.
Also PoE players: The [league mechanic] doesn't need to be nerfed, you just need to play a [current meta] build!
MFers found strength in their Afflictions. They became reliant on them. I am not so foolish.

TBH I prefer Ascendancy classes to actually matter. All nodes are good, all classes are useful.
Problem of classes of old was that they didn't matter enough for people to think long about them. The moment some strong class came out, people sticked to it because it actually mattered.
The main point for me is that you cannot take all the classes at once or all the nodes at once. You can still die in a single hit if you don't know what you're doing, no matter how OP you think you are. Pretty excited to theory craft, as opposed to doing same shit over and over again or grabbing whatever Ascendancy, because they all are equally bad.
Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance.
Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge.

I wonder how many pro-nerf guys tried to play with less popular skills (Reave, Ice Spear, Dual Strike etc), not only meta stuff...

The only 'problematic' shaper/elder items are the phys as extra ele dmg mods which is a problem with how phys conversion works in the first place along with fake dual wield stat sticking counting as a global mod (which was already a problem in the first place before Elder/Shaper mods).

AoE nerfs didnt kill the game, but it did kill the AoE skills. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I know players who quit the game because some of these. Read the patch notes again, 3.0 and 3.1 are nerfs, nerfs, nerfs and then some more nerfs. You already got what you asking for - nerfs - and it made the game less fun.
Anyway, I'm sure 3.2 patch notes will have more nerfs and added micro. I'm sure you will love it!

Only people who can play nothing but meta will consider those things nerfs. The changes were a simple case of meta change and buffing the hidden powercreep.

How so? Everyone exploiting the same narrow broken mechanic doesn't strike me as the pinnacle of build diversity, how has nerfing those specific narrow mechanics made things worse?

More like it killed meta diversity.
