The Illusion of Choice

I think you are also giving yourself a lot of preconceived notions of what is possible and what is not. Instead of just limiting yourself, perhaps you could try testing the limits of what you think is possible.

I just told you what's possible and what's not. These are not preconceived notions. These are facts.

Anything is possible as long as you accept the pros and cons of a particular build and adjust your gameplay accordingly.

If your only desire is to completely faceroll content at the end then naturally there will be less options for you. That is true in any game; it's not just specific to PoE.

Most of the time this is said by folks who only want to enjoy the "endgame" so it's a result of the insta-gratification society we live in today. But in my opinion a large part of ARPG's is watching your characters develop over time throughout the game. I love it when I see people say "There's nothing to do in this game but the same maps over and over". It's as if the 60ish levels to get there don't exist at all.
If you find yourself disagreeing with something I've said then you can take solace in the fact that you are no longer alone in the world.

The more I keep playing, the more I keep realizing this game doesn't have many choices. It's exactly like Diablo 2 in regards to stats. Get enough dex/str/int to use your gear/skills, then stack HP.

Every build should revolve around getting as much max HP % nodes as possible.
Every build should link blood magic to their skills and use their mana for auras.
Want to play a summoner, roll witch.
Want to play melee, roll marauder.
Want to play a caster, roll templar.

The only exception to these is a shadow, and that's only good for EK.

...

For a game that was hailed for its uniqueness and choices, there really aren't that many.

I think you need to play more and not just listen to what everyone else tells you because your assessment is simply not accurate.

I don't use blood magic, even on very fast attacking dual wield builds (the melee style that is supposed to have the worst problems with mana) Don't you realize that blood magic has inherent drawbacks? The biggest one being: Forget about using % reserved auras, and those are the most powerful auras.

As for "off-class" builds: there are many many ways to do it. You don't have to roll a witch to be a summoner. (Did you know that the shadow can reach every single minion node on the passive tree before they even reach lvl 60?) Templar can make a good summoner too.

As for melee, EVERY class in the game can do it, even witch. I have TWO different witch melee builds that I have planned out. One of them I have already started leveling up (dual-wield elemental build using static blows) and I've been amazed at how effective it is.

I think the problem is that people automatically discount any build/skill that is even just 5% less effective than a "cookie-cutter" build. If you stop being a powergamer and stop obsessing over your stats/DPS, and learn a lot about the mechanics of this game, you will find that there are many many different builds that can work with the right combination of skill gems, passives & gear.

If you try something interesting and unique, will you be slightly less effective than the most powerful builds? Maybe, but this doesn't mean it's impossible and that there is "an illusion of choice". It just means that you are stubborn and refuse to use anything that anyone says is weak, even if it is only 5% weaker than other options.

This +1. Everyone is so worried about what people say "best" is and therefore say there is no choice. Every game has something that technically works better at one thing or another. No one said you have to do exactly that. I play a lightning arrow ranger like many others, but I use some different passives that others say is less viable. Is it? I don't know but I have plenty of fun my way and seem to do just fine.

Posting a crap build has little to do with my point that making a Templar would have resulted in more useful points being used.

My point exactly. This seemed like a perfectly viable end game build, yet the OP is going to trash it because it isnt perfect, since they could have used 3 more points elsewhere. If OP wants a perfect build, they should go back to D3, stack IAS, CC, and CD and be done with it. This game isnt for them.

His point is that there is no reason to make a class/spec combo that makes you spend wasted points when you don't have to. Its not even a tradeoff its just a straight loss of effectiveness. My marauder summoner will never ever ever ever be as good as my witch summoner. It completely defeats the purpose of a combined class skill map when certain classes are still going to be pigeon holed into certain roles and skills.

Yeah you can make a ranger fireball caster, but why would you?

Agreed.

What started as one of the most in depth customization setups going, shortly turned into a joke. Theres not even a smidgem of the builds that there should be based on that tree. This comes down to the fact that they have made everything so "challenging", that you just cant afford to play anything but the stack hit point build.

Sadly at this stage, I would say D3 and POE are par for par as far as build diversity. Fortunately, POE still has other things going for it that place it ahead of that atrocity.

Just my opinions.

spoken like a true baddie. Protip: the reason you die all the time has little to do with the game and everything to do with you

Given the amount of design work they must have out into the passive tree, if the above is true, it is a sad sad day indeed.

And no need to figure them out, look them up.

I really hope this is not true, or it's back to Torchlight 2 full time for me, where build diversity is rife. I have 3 high level Mages there and they couldn't be more different to play.
Did you know level 91 is the halfway point to level 100? This means that a softcore character dying ONCE at level 85+ can lose many days of progress.

I dont know about you, but I have fun playing this game. Maybe your fun is sitting back and clicking everything once and killing it, and never dying, but I like the challenge.

And so what that some builds lose 5-10% effectiveness. Like its such a huge deal to lose that little of survival, or dps. I dont need 10k dps to go through the game, I do fine at 9k. I dont HAVE to have 10k life, when I still survive perfectly well at 9k. If you want cookie cutter builds, go elsewhere. D3 and Torchlite make well for cookie cutter builds that trash the game with no trouble. I like testing and tweaking builds until I make them well enough to survive and win. If I wanted to win that easily, I would just go play Avatar: TBE.

If you don't understand the appeal of making a challenging and interesting build that doesn't rely on an overpowered skill combination, that's fine. No one is forcing you to.

Those of us who DO understand the appeal will keep on rolling 2-handed sword melee shadows, bowrauders, dual-wield templars and fireball rangers regardless of what other people think. We did the same kind of thing in Diablo 2 as well. Melee Sorc ftw!

Some of the most fun I've ever had on PoE was gotten from playing a crazy build idea that I was sure was going to fail miserably. My hybrid bow/dual-wield Ranger and my dual-wield rapiers Templar builds come to mind.
