Ghost in the Shell... Amazing...

Super interesting, finisterre.

I still prefer Oshii's treatment of Patlabor over his treatment of GitS.

Well, seems it was not only good time for him, really.

Spoiler
Though his long lasting style, thorough image gathering had been seen on the production of 1st Patlabor anime film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFaBdW2K4RQ&t=3m9s

Patlabor project was his coming back after his retirement from major anime production and failure of original anime video.

His last career in the major production was director of 2 films and chief producer of TV series, UruseiYatsura (~1984) which Studio Deen was actually producing and later, also produced first OVA Patlabor.
I guess he had nowhere to go although it was his own decision that he left the major production to create what he wanted. (he had offers/recommendations from Miyazaki and others known as Studio Ghibli later on, though he couldn't find his place.)

As one of the director of Patlabor project (he joined the project lastly), he started the story from the vast filled ground at Tokyo Bay which is one of his favorite landscape. https://youtu.be/9tNSgpNtG2E?t=2m5s

Let me refer this interview again https://youtu.be/Uv08-5CqmFQ?t=9m37s

After watching the result of online popularity vote from his works (Patlabor I was the second and II was the first), he said
"Ah..Patlabor is (for the audience) yet though...you know, I have least attachment to Patlabor among my past works. I was just doing I could do every moment and there were not much contradictions. I don't remember any struggles either. Patlabor II is in fact the most I enjoyed if you ask me, gathering images actually, meeting various people, researching and such, the most unusual way for the anime production. We ran around all over Tokyo and in that sense, I enjoyed the project enough though it turned out to be forgettable. On the contrary, I was in agony for Angel's Egg (....he went on to close the topic)"

"The movie does provide a narrative reason that Major (and Pitt’s character) are white Americans surrounded by the Japanese, in a way that’s actually the only interesting psychological element to any of the characters in the film. At the risk of divulging spoilers, I’ll just say that the film finds a way to sneak in the idea of cultural appropriation being destructive … while still, of course, being a prime example of it. The reason this plot point exists is only because a white American actor was cast in the first place, and the reason that had to happen was so the film could be financed, which is the reason this shit all keeps happening anyway."

Hahahahaahahahaahahaahaahahahahahaahahaha.

Cool, I didn't want to watch this garbage fire anyway.
Cultural appropriation? White people should be the maddest of all since we are responsible for majority of things that benefit humans of the world, yet you don't hear us constantly crying about cultural appropriation.
Remember when I won a screenshot contest and made everyone butt-hurt? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

I mean sure, Hitler practically eliminated unemployment, but you know, there was that whole Jew thing when he wasn't being injected with a lovely cocktail of heroin and animal parts.

what Japanese think about whitewashing

The studios wanted to make the movie more friendly to western audiences, so they cast white folks in the leads. Boo fucking hoo. Ridiculous thing to get so worked up about. Better discuss the movie itself.

Saw it yesterday, mixed feelings. It was beautifully done as far as graphics and effects go, Scarlett and most of the other actors were great (except the bad guy, who was ridiculous). Way too shallow, though. It was a straightforward sci-fi action movie with a ton of effects and unnecessary slow motion scenes. In this sense, they westernized it well. Doesn't look like it's based on an anime.
The Wheel of Nerfs turns, and builds come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the build that gave it birth comes again.

Ghost In The Shell is quite shallow, superficial, depthless, and anti-pedagogic. Only unsophisticated minds could sit through the wearisome amount of time to observe this gaudy disaster. How nice it must be for people without complex minds adept in film analysis. Once you become this educated, it's difficult and arduous to see through the eyes of the uneducated. How nice for them though, to be able to enjoy such meaningless "art".

A valid point, but while Japanese citizens may feel indifferent, Asian Americans are affected by this. Representation is important. Whites can turn on the television or watch a movie and have a hundred faces that are like their own and have role models to choose from. How many times have we seen situations like the women in Star Trek inspiring young girls to be interested in science, or people becoming engineers because of James Doohan?

I'm not surprised to see the whitewashing in the movie is still discussed. To the folks who are offended by it, knock yourselves out. Yawn.

I'm sure the studio officials who made the budget and revenue estimates, and who know Scarlett is an extremely cashable actress, will be moved. If Asian leads were more lucrative, guess what - you would be seeing more Asian leads. As Charan said, it's all about the cash.

Before any sins of co-opting or misappropriation, I'd level accusations of simplifying a very nuanced character and thus making a cash grab at the expense of narrative integrity. I don't think many fans of GITS would disagree with either of those.

I haven't even seen the anime, much less read the manga, and it was still obvious the movie was a simplified adaptation for the mass consumer. Welcome to capitalism and globalization, enjoy your ride. Art has turned almost entirely into business, and we all know what sells best, don't we?

Mindless mediocrity in a shiny package.

This is what they described at the introduction of 1st GitS anime film.
