It's perfect as a league starter, but so is Flameblast totem which is just as gear independent. We do have 0 mana problems, 3 totems instead of 2, quicker totem placement, no need to worry about ignite immune enemies, and a big win/win for party play.

We either double party members damage and they're happy, or we double party members damage and they die to elemental reflect. :^)

If that's the case, which areas of the tree would you prioritize first?

Easiest way is to level with Firestorm. Pick up life, aoe, generic elemental dmg at the templar start, go past Elemental Overload into Witch Start where you take life and aoe. Then depending on how early you want to transition to CI you either go Scion life rectangle or go for travel points in the final passive tree.

A problem with going bow totem early is that you need to meet the dex requirements of the bow skill gem and the totem nodes are in the opposite direction of the dex nodes. The Tempest + Wrath aura until sick rare bows show up on poe.trade, and take the +30/+20 dex nodes and totem nodes if you want to stick to the build from the start.
