Comparing/Contrasting PoE and Diablo 3

Wrong, one game allows you to purchase in game GEAR that DIRECTLY affects gameplay.

The other is more of a donation system than anything.
Hint: probably because the game is free.

I, for one, will probably spend around $40 (what I feel is a fair price for a boxed game), and I don't even care about cosmetic items.

If I understand the orb system of D3 and the flask system of PoE right your comparison is not quite correct.
You can´t pick up the orbs and take them with you. You have to use them or leave them. I don´t like this at all.
But in PoE it is up to you to decide when to use the charges of your flasks.

Biggest problem will forever be the lame idea to make stats unchangeable. Diablo 2s system was flawed, but instead of just turning it off, GGG improved upon it. I really hope blizzard takes a look at what POE is doing right.
I play both!

/end of discussion.

I just owned this thread, totally.

(sorry dint mean to quote u lol)
I think d3 has better special fx, sound, monster UI, More in depth game play, more blood, but is a bit less shiny and dark.

heh, will see
I like how these games are very different. I like both! D3 looks totally kick-ass and extremely fun modern-style ARPG, PoE is more hardcore oldschool APRG.
Hodor? HODOR!
The biggest difference is the PVP.

Diablo 3 : say that won't balance the builds for pvp and there won't be competitive pvp

POE : U can even loot gear.

you dont know if poe will be balanced well...

The most important thing is how deep the gameplay itself will be and up to now i see diablo3 in front of PoE.

D3 has a cooldown/combo system that will make gameplay way more interresting then everything ive seen from PoE so far

Although both games are in beta and I haven't played either, there are some differences I have noticed that haven't really been touched on in this thread so far.

From the overwhelming majority of the streams of PoE I've viewed I can assume that it is still in the original Diablo 2 mindset of pick your favorite ability, spam your favorite ability and pretty much ignore the rest.

Diablo 3, on the other hand is attempting to give every skill a use. Its making an attempt at stopping the mindless spam that consists of its predecessor. There is obviously nothing preventing you from doing so in D3 but the developers have stated that they do wish for you to change up what ability your using depending on what you are fighting.

That brings me to the other obvious difference between the two, which is character customization through active abilities.

Path of Exile lets you use pretty much any skill you want and allows you to augment them multiple times through gems. Your skill set and augments are limited through how many can be allocated into open gem sockets that are located on both armor and weapons. You must also meet a stat point requirement to equip them, with this number going up as the skill itself levels. This allows for either a highly varying skill set with little perks or a very limited skill set with many modifiers. GGG has said that they currently have 30 or so skill gems implemented but hope to have over 100 by open beta. I do not know how many gems that modify other skills are to be implemented or that are currently live.

Diablo 3 has its abilities class locked. Each class has its own set of abilities to choose from, which differs from class to class. You are allowed 6 active abilities at any given time, but can change them out any time you wish. So far each individual class has over 20 spells to pick from, totaling 113 combined. Each spell can be further customized through runes. There are 5 different types of runes with each having a different affect on the attuned spell. Each rune also has a random roll to determine its potency when applied, providing a great deal of variances between players.

Neither game has a skill tree to put points into and gain spells or level them.

As far as passive skills go, Path of Exile has a massive skill tree that interconnects, resembling a spider's web. The tree itself starts with 3 branching paths, each representing one of the three main attributes: strength, dexterity or intelligence. All classes share the same passive skill tree. From what I've seen so far only 1 point may be put into each passive, and each level you gain allows another point to be spent. With a planned level cap of 100, one can assume that there will be a minimal of 100 points to spend. Passive talents vary from base stat point increases to adding a knock back to your attacks.

Diablo 3 opts for having no tree system, and instead simply gives you every passive, but restricts you in that you can only have 3 active at a time. Each class gets 15 or so passives to choose from, with each class having its own set which differs from one another, though there are similarities between them. The passives you get to choose from are extremely powerful in comparison to Path of Exiles passives, but you do only get to pick 3 as opposed to a hundred.
