I'd have to say:
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time

I know it's much of a puzzle/dungeon crawler/quest and so on, but it is an RPG after all, maybe not as complex as some of today's top scoring RPG's but the amount of details, the various environments, the different and extremely challenging puzzles and quests present in this game were so unique to the 90's, but mostly my childhood memories bound to this game, of which I remember so fondly after more than a decade make this title my top RPG of all times.
In fact I might be picking up the N64 console again soon :D

You really need to try the 3DS version. It's amazing, and looks like a GameCube game. And the true 3D is awesome. Comes with Master Quest as a mirror-image world too.

My favs are:
Witcher 1&2
Vampire:Bloodlines <--- great atmosphere and still replay-able after so many years of its release.
Mass Effect series
TES Morrowind and Oblivion
Neverwinter Nights

I've always wanted to give Vampire: bloodlines a go.
Really worth playing?

My top five games are:

1. Morrowind
2. Final Fantasy XI
3. Lufia & the Fortress of Doom (NES)
4. Final Fantasy 8 (Playstation)
5. chrono cross (Playstation)
Off of the top of my head..

Chrono Trigger & Super Mario RPG : Legend of the Seven Stars.
-insert Path of Exile propaganda here.-
chronotrigger! or ffx ! they are both so epic i cant choose between them =P
For atmosphere and lore my opinion would be Morrowind.

Think of a buggy Deus Ex game with vampires in Los Angeles. If that sounds good, get the game and the Unofficial Patch. This game is notorious for bugginess but the fanbase fixed much of it
