What does "viable build" mean for you?

8 mod twinned core clear?

uber Atziri/Izaro?

Gorge run in sub 1:30?

Depends on goals. First off, you have to define if it's going to be for SC or HC. When you get this out of the way, you could still have various goals:

- a cheap league starter build to make some quick cash in the first few days
- uber atziri farm
- uber lab farm / speedruns / player boosting
- leveling and/or farming with a cheap earlygame build and transitioning to a more expensive and endgame-oriented build later
- racing the ladder to 100
- hitting 100 without caring about the ladder
- competing in a race
- being a super fat tank and just enjoying feeling unkillable
- being a DPS warrior and killing any boss in a second
- having insane clear speed
- playing some goofy build because you enjoy the fuck out of it
- farming with IIR/IIQ
- being able to do any content in the game
- creating an original and previously unknown build to show off to people

..and so on. A build could, of course, have more than one purpose.

A viable build is a build which achieves its purpose(s). Since there could be a 1000 different purposes, the word 'viable' is more or less meaningless unless more narrowly defined.

You have to be realistic about these things.

used to be: killing act 3 dom :p then id feel successful. then it turned into doing normal atziri. if I can make a build that can kill her, i consider myself viable. im only OP if i can kill Uber which has only happened on 1 build :) what's good for me is def not for others so this question is very personal!! i dont care bout clear speed like others, for example ;)

Viable to me means one easy to understand thing:"able to compete with the current challenge league economy" - it is really that simple.

If only super fast clearing builds are able to make sufficiant currency while playing somewhat casual, i am "forced" to choose a tier 1 build to enjoy the game and its economy (current state of the game - going fast is the only thing that matters because there are no real threats which will stop you)

If only super tanky builds and carefull gameplay can do endgame content i am willing to make multiple characters, one to grind mid tier content, one for MF to generate enough wealth to make an endgame viable high budget build (that is what PoE used to be in the past for me)
viable to me means you're able to do mid level maps consistently and fairly quickly in order to grind for levels and gear to further other builds.

atziri doesn't matter. completely optional and cliche especially now-a-days. even uber lab i'd say is 100% optional.

a viable build to me is a character you can play as your main in order to fund and build specific characters for those other goals, like atziri, uber atziri, twinned t15s etc.

That's more or less what I was going to say. T7/T8 at reasonable speed. Slow in T7, I have failed. Can clear well beyond that, we have beaten the game.
Viable is simply 'fun' for me. I still treat my characters as HC solo self found with a few other rules but the goal of my builds is to enjoy spending time with them no matter how long or short lived they end up being within the context of my rules.
Depends on the context that it's used. I tend not to use it to avoid confusion.

1st char :
clr speed on dried lake and low-mid maps

2nd,3rd chars .... :
1. mf or aura option for party runs
2. dps option for fast farming maps till t12 (one 6l ~12ex)
3. dps/tank option for doing end game content (~20ex)
