Town Portals: Good or Bad for ARPGs?

It would be cool if PoE's portals were a little more unique, at the moment they look horrendous.

Idea to copy diablo 3 system +1

PoE doesn't need to copy anyone, but it is folly to not look at how other games are handling the issues (D3's system is clearly inspired by WoW's Hearthstones).

It's probable that all PoE really needs to do is make it so that if a person opens a TP in a boss room, the fight resets. Or you simply can't. Of course, that's copying D2's Ancients fight, and as people have already brought up, it'd probably be a great fit for the game.

I agree with someone in the front page that said "Create a no-tp league". Isn't that what leagues are supposed to be? to create a custom environment where players can play with.
I would agree with the No-TP rule for boss areas like Merveil except for the fact that currently you have no cannon fodder with which to recharge flasks. Not so crucial for a melee character but for casters? Meh.

I do think it is poor that a quick TP to town and back instantly fills flasks. This needs to be squashed.
I used to be apathetic, now I just don't care.
When I'm playing PoE and i know i will have hours of undisturbed play i will explore every nick and carney of a cave or forest. However there are issues that arise in the real world that obligates me to drop what I'm doing and leave the computer not being able to safe guard my character would be a pain, so being able to have them in my bags for such occasions is a godsend.

I play hardcore so without a town portal in my bags for emergency situations i would be dead before my Path of Exile journey even begins.

There has to be some way to get back to a town quickly. I agree with other post that running back all the time would get old very fast. If it takes you 15 minutes to go back town, then another another 15 to get back to where you were, your not going to be playing this game very long.

I do agree that town portals should not be a method to save yourself in a dire situation. I think a good solution to this is have it take some amount of time for the portal to open after activating it. Maybe around 15 to 20 seconds?

I think they should be in, gets quite annoying having to actually run back and forth to town. As for the lock in combat, whatever put it there if you want. I could see that for hardcore mode to not save yourself but in softcore mode I'd say let it stay.
Tps are good to keep the game phase up and keep the game easily accessible. However it needs to have some limitations so it cant trivialize the game. As mentioned for example not been usable in bossareas. Maybe even not usable in combat at all, because why ? When they are usable in combat the only thing that makes is to it can be abused as a lifesaver ?

The TP concept of the Dota like games is superior to the Diablo TP system in my opinion and it would be very easy to transfer it over to PoE.

Turn TP scrolls into a 3sec channel that breaks on damage (or damage treshold) and the caster will use it at the end of the channel. This way you cant place one beforehand as a safety measure and you cant TP out of combat. On the other hand the out of combat use would be 100% the same as it is now. It would even work with teammates since the portal only shuts down when the caster uses it to return.
