Help me convince a friend of the flexibility of PoE classes

Nope. There is only voltaxic spark.

Ah Torchlight 2... one of the worst multiplayer game experiences I've had as my friend went an Embermage and Frostphase/Prismatic Bolt killed everything while I struggled to keep up on my Engineer... but I digress...

I bought that game prior to release on the promise they were going to deliver a mac version. It took them 2 years. In the meantime I bought a pc and found out I hadn't missed much.

Go show him Phox's shield charge build lol. If that aint flexibility idk what is.
Shield charge build? Link please, I want to see it!
And worst change is putting almost all bosses in new version of maps into fucking small areas, where you can't kite well or dodge stuff. What a terrible idiot invented that I want say to him: dude flick you, seriously flick you very much.
For HC, Duelist is the best choice. This is has been statistically verified as well.
Your friend isn't wrong.

HC favours huge life pools and damage reduction over everything else.
Face it, all of your suggestions are worse than this idea:

We had a brief discussion about Torchlight II where he told he tried the game for the first half of the first act and liked how there are many viable playstyle choices. Melee, ranged, small fast hits or heavy slow hits. Apparently in PoE all bow users must use ice shot because the chill/freeze is too good and nothing else makes sense, especially on hardcore. And duelist is the best class for using a bow even though the early game is really difficult, so there's no point in using a ranger. I showed him the Voltaxic CoC build, to which he commented that at such a high level any build would be effective. And that the player demonstrating the build on the video is clearly playing SC since he's taking big risks (= not running away when at half health). He also commented that "forum builds" are not all that good.

What argument could I make to convince him that PoE has lots and lots of viable build options? Any particularly good build that would make a case against ice shot? All of my own characters use self-made builds so I'm a bit lost here. They're not necessarily the best possible builds either, but good enough to beat the content I've faced with them (with the exception of a few map bosses).

I guess it depends what you mean when you say "viable".

If "viable" means able to defeat every map and boss the game throws at you, then I would say your friend is correct. There aren't very many viable builds on this game. Almost every build has a weakness this game will find a way to exploit.

After ascendancy the duelist is certainly powerful. So he's right about that as well. I even started over my fire blasting Templar as a duelist. lol

He already knows what he wants to know. Just let him have his fun.

I stopped trying to convince my friends long ago. Different people, different tastes, I suppose?
Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance.
Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge.

Same here. If people dint want to play your game and make up stupid arguements it means they dont want to play your game. They dont have the balls to admit. Which might have somthing to do with how bad you are trying to make them play the game.
I know this feel. I start to enjoy feeling like the one eyed beyond blind people.
WTH I thought all bow users are using a spell; spark.:P
Git R Dun!
If I was in your place, I would be introducing him to the skill gem system and the ability to link them + complex passive tree system vs the stat system that Torchlight 2 has. Oh and gear crafting.

In my experience PoE has a more complex stat system, Torchlight 2 has a more simple stats system.

Torchlight 2 feels lacking in the build department that would last in harder difficulties and later levels...usually it's just Embermage builds or Berzerker builds.

Torchlight 2 is a fun hack n' slash ARPG but I had more hrs spent in PoE :P.

He has played PoE and has a level 76 bow duelist, so he knows those things quite well. He just has a rather solid opinion of the viability of alternative options, or a skewed definition of viability.
