Help me convince a friend of the flexibility of PoE classes
We had a brief discussion about Torchlight II where he told he tried the game for the first half of the first act and liked how there are many viable playstyle choices. Melee, ranged, small fast hits or heavy slow hits. Apparently in PoE all bow users must use ice shot because the chill/freeze is too good and nothing else makes sense, especially on hardcore. And duelist is the best class for using a bow even though the early game is really difficult, so there's no point in using a ranger. I showed him the Voltaxic CoC build, to which he commented that at such a high level any build would be effective. And that the player demonstrating the build on the video is clearly playing SC since he's taking big risks (= not running away when at half health). He also commented that "forum builds" are not all that good.
What argument could I make to convince him that PoE has lots and lots of viable build options? Any particularly good build that would make a case against ice shot? All of my own characters use self-made builds so I'm a bit lost here. They're not necessarily the best possible builds either, but good enough to beat the content I've faced with them (with the exception of a few map bosses). Last bumped on Apr 21, 2016, 7:53:06 AM

" Time to upgrade friends bro. He is a lost cause, unfortunately. |

Your friend does not seem to be interested in a discussion that involves the exchange of facts.
He seems perfectly ok with just imagining what is true, regardless of whether or not they actually know, and running with it. No point in even trying. | |
If you want a specific ascendency class, you have to pick a specific character class.
Pretty flexible, eh? |

Sounds like a Republican.

" Still way more flexible than e.g. Diablo III, where each class has a completely separate set of skills and shares very little with other classes. This friend is a hardcore min/maxer, which does make presenting arguments to him difficult. Maybe I should try pointing out that a duelist can use a bow and be good with it, a feat that would be impossible in many other similar games with classes heavily tailored towards certain kinds of weapons. Edit: Oh yeah, he also said single-target damage is all that matters because the trash will die anyway and the boss is the difficult thing. Last edited by databeaver#1892 on Apr 18, 2016, 5:43:04 PM

My marauder is the living proof of diversity. Anyone could say that Marauder is for melee. I am currently level 96 and I rarely use him in melee. Marauder gives very good results with fire skills, and also I have used it as a Summoner with excellent results. Now is Voltaxic Spark and although the configuration is not 100% optimal I just smashing everything in my way seamlessly... Bethesda is known for having good ideas and terrible realization of them. GGG is a Bethesda subsidiary or what?

Ah Torchlight 2... one of the worst multiplayer game experiences I've had as my friend went an Embermage and Frostphase/Prismatic Bolt killed everything while I struggled to keep up on my Engineer... but I digress...
Case for flexibility of PoE classes: -All skill/support gems usable by any class -All uniques in the game usable by any class -Classes not restricted to being caster/ranged/melee - 2h or dual wielding - All classes can be any play style so long as they reach equipment stats requirement -Same passive tree used by all classes means that while it might not be optimal, you can be flexible and creative with any class -Just because your friend says 'Forum builds aren't good' doesn't mean they're not viable and further support the argument of class flexibility. Seems pretty flexible to me. "The key to winning any fight is simply staying alive."
