Discharge isn't going anywhere it thematically doesn't make sense to split it up now and as far as trigger goes, it won't ever be removed.
GGG could have easily made discharge a self cast only type of thing or rather restricted, but they didn't and people have already gotten taste of it. https://youtu.be/T9kygXtkh10?t=285

Well, the Elementalist's Mastermind of Dischord is clearly designed around the all-elements-at-once version of Discharge, so it seems GGG is committed to the design. (The prerequisite, Pendulum of Destruction, seems to be a nod to self-cast.)
What I think is that Discharge should have its wording changes such that Spell Echo works just fine with it, getting two casts off one set of charges. Plus a 10%-or-less nerf to Discharge damage overall, to make triggered casting weaker. In short, buff self-cast, nerf triggered (but not "make it untriggerable"). I would like to see a Vaal Discharge which costs a LOT of souls but brings you up to maximum charges of all three types, and deals its damage based on the number of charges gained. This would actually have maximum synergy in builds without automatic generators such as Voll's Protector, Voll's Devotion, or Romira's Banquet. When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted. " I'd take the polar opposite approach, along with the discharge rework I'd also disable echo and multistrike on vaal skills. After all, souls don't grow on trees and can't be pulled out of our asses any more than charges. Anyone that played the other PoE can tell you it isn't a good idea to mess with souls. I like your vaal discharge idea, though. " Thats just silly to disable both echo and multi on vaal skills, it completely removes the purpose of using damaging vaal skills when you remove those abilities. We need less artificial limitations, not more. We already have spells that can't use spell echo and melee skills that can't use multistrike. Yes, I'm a CoC Fakener this league, but hear me out.
Discharge requires a lot a work to even work in the "OP" way you people seem whine about. First of, we need a bloody Vagan Dagger or get enough Accuracy (which limits our survival due to nodes,) next up we need a bloody 5L, else it'll feel so goddamn bad. We need bloody Elreon Jewelry which aren't cheap either, they require serious crafting and time investment. If you have any idea how annoyed I've been over that I can only buy ONE single METAMOD item from Masters every day, it's really hard to even obtain the right base of item and they're sickly expensive if you buy from others. I agree the skill is stupid as hell right now, but that's CoC, not Discharge. IMO TRIGGER-GEMS should of never been made (I was a HUGE opponnent of the adding of CWDT).
