In games like this i usually make 1 guy and hes all i play and i beat the game once then i focus on gear collection. I really dont like the idea of having to make guy after guy to get a specific build just right. I also want to play a game how i want to play. Whats the point of having open specs if players are basically forced to follow a specific build, if they dont they wont make it past a specific point?

Is it possible to spec myself based on what i want, not what a webpage tells me, and still beat end game content?

I really dont want to end up in a situation where im running through the same content over and over and over and over again.

Given what you've said in your post...honestly? This game doesn't seem like it will be something you would enjoy, and that's not to be rude, but you really sound like you wouldn't want to touch this game at all. Path of Exile is a game that does require a lot of planning out of builds, learning information, learning from mistakes, and yes, that sometimes means you're going to 'brick' a character. This happened back in Diablo II as well, though Blizzard got it right later on and gave people 1 full respec linked to the very first quest you do with 'Clearing the Den of Evil'. It gave you some flexibility to try out different things on your own without the need of a guide from the start, and if worst came to worst, you could respec and try again, but you only had 3 shots at it, assuming you made it through the first quest in Normal, Nightmare, and Hell difficulties.

As to the last thing you said, this game is going to have you running the same content through Normal, Cruel, and Merciless acts, and after a certain point in Merciless you'll gain access to maps. That will help out with tileset variety, but eventually you will be running the same maps over and over again either for gear, exp, or other things. If by some chance you're still wanting to give the game a shot, you should expect a few things:

1. You WILL brick your first character if you don't follow a guide/do enough research on the game even before you play it. Now, while I do recommend doing some research and looking at some guides to get a general idea of what is capable in this game, I also suggest to NOT FOLLOW THOSE GUIDES AS GOSPEL TRUTH. This is one of the biggest mistakes new players make and a lot of it I think is from the fear of feeling they are 'wasting time', when that 'time wasted' is actually well spent. You (hopefully) learn from your mistakes, why your build didn't work, and what you can do to fix it. You can only truly improve by screwing up and learning from those errors, or else you will never figure out what you're doing wrong and how to fix it.

2. This game is very much about re-rolling characters for different builds, farming for different sets of gear to make those builds work, and leveling them up to a high enough point to see if your build idea can stand on its own. If all you're interested in is just a one-guy approach, then this game is likely not going to appeal to you. It's built around re-rolling and if you don't find that prospect of having to run the same content over and over again on different characters enjoyable...you're not going to like this game.

3. There is lore in this game, but if you're looking for a deep experience and a very fleshed out world...you may want to look elsewhere. Not saying this game is bad in that department, but if it is important to you, then PoE is not going to give you what you're after.

That all said, at the very least give the game a shot and be as open-minded as you can in the beginning. If you cannot do that, or if you do and you find the game isn't your cup of tea, then you can stop playing and uninstall it at any time you wish. It is 'free to play' in that you don't have to pay any subscription fees or the like to go through most of the content, and you'll likely have your answer quickly enough.
My theme for playing PoE

Even games with in depth story lines i take breaks from to do other things. If i make a toon just to brick it then have to re roll a new toon to go back through the same maps the same bosses, i wont last long. I might make my 3rd guy and be done for.

Haha. If you don't like the idea of making new characters or running content over and over, this game is not something you will like. Even if you miraculously get to endgame on your first character with no problems, you will rerun the same content until your eyes bleed hoping for drops that never come due to RNG.

You are not forced to following any guide or meta. I dont anymore but I have experience. I know tree now, I know monsters, I know gear and gems etc. But when I started I did copy.

I followed ziggyDs MoM EK shadow way back almost two years ago. I am type of person that learns by doing not on the books like poewiki for example. So I thought the best way to learn way jusy go through motions of copying something successful and I liked the looks of in video playing I saw. I was successful. Made it to 74 in hardcore first try with zigdyDs build. Even my second build I copied. By the time I felt comfortable just doing it myself was 5-6 builds down the line. I picked a skill no one used. Ice Nova and made a very successful stab at it. Even beating hardest bosses in the game at the time. You can see that build guide in sig.

My advice is just copy a build first time. Guarantees success and helps you learn game A to Z.

What's really happening here is that the premise of the post is a lie. He doesn't want to play this game at all. He wants to play an entirely different game.

We're way too quick to believe that he actually was interested in PoE.
I came from the MMO world and started out with the one character mentality too. Took a while to get used to the fact that it's about playing your ACCOUNT and the characters are somewhat incidental. Sure you can brick a guy but your next guy gets to use whatever stuff he has accumulated. And you will occasionally find an item along the way that makes you want to try something different, so you may start a new build to incorporate that item.

Also we get a skill tree reset every few months when GGG releases new content. If you're playing standard league you can repsec all your characters at that time. Temp leagues start from zero every time. Empty stash, no characters. A complete fresh start. Your standard characters and stuff will still be there but there is no way to transfer items between leagues.

Highly recommend playing on standard if you're a stick-to-one-character-forever kind of player.
It's possible but very hard, and have to adapt your style to the changing balance, one day your build is powerful, the next day you will delete it. :)

Yes you will brick a character. Bad bandit choices have been the cause of many a bricked character.
I want cut scenes damnit.

How can you not like steak?

Okay - this is somewhat true. I don't really pay attention to dialogue anymore, even when taking friends through the game (I play with my stepson, and an old friend who lives on the other side of the continent - gives us a good excuse to BS every week. :) ) - the fun isn't lore (as much) but rather the amazing scenery, and the fun of just kicking butt - and the flexibility in how you do it.

The story line isn't nearly as long and deep as WoW or CoH or many others (boy do I miss the many different story paths through CoH back in the day) - but it does have meat. It is worth doing - and while you're doing it, check out the challenges: there are a number of them that are story based.

As to re-rolling and bricking - I've never fully bricked a character. I did accidentally get Ancestral Bond on my Witch, thinking cool - two totems and zombies! Sweet! But screwed things up and wasn't able to get my totem out and once my zombies died, I couldn't figure out WHY???

It pays to READ! LOL "You can't deal damage yourself" would have been a good phrase to pay attention to! LOL - my own fault. But hey - I posted on trade and went to poe.trade and bought an Orb of Regret and dumped that and was back to normal. :)

The game is worth it. Change your point of view a bit and enjoy the grind. :)
