I want to play this game....but...
" Yeah but some people play self found and won't participate in trades. You don't really have to reroll just for that, it just happens, I rolled a duelist last night for a wings of entropy build, only had marauders and shadows before, so my chars can only benefit from that. |

Hi, new player?
This is a complex game. Nobody is forced to follow some1's build. Unless u know in depth the game, u will fail like alot of us did. Gears interactin with skills, with tree, gems interaction with other gems, with tree....etc As for end game? I duno if there is a end game here. Most players never reach lv100 as it takes a lot time and investment in resources to do that. Not forgetting the xp penalty, 1 death and it could wasted ur days of hard work. To be honest i have seen pple in my friend list, told them since u re new, go follow a guide and stick to the guide's advice. They dont and they modify (gamer's ego?) And i start receiving pms, oh fuck, dying too much in merciless. Even reach dried lake has problem farming. And next.. .no more online. It took me a year or so to understand this game's basic, even alot of things i still duno. |

^What mivo said.
Without prior knowledge of in-game content and normal "trial and error" it is unrealistic to succeed on your very first character. This can be viewed as a pro or a con depending on time commitment and personal goals. I would say you would need at least up to 3 chars into high content to realistically grasp the defenses and offenses provided within PoE. At which point you will have the content knowledge to realistically be creative with your own concepts and build idea's. It's a fallacy to think you can be creative inside PoE without that knowledge. I started playing in Jan 2014 and did my very first char (in SC) without any research, and she ended up at lvl 72 (died a lot) doing all Acts and low/middle tier maps - which most players do not consider endgame, some others may...
My second char fared better, but more due to my improved experience with PoE ( and some gear from the first one) that any research I've done. That said, PoE is an extremely complex game, where bricking a char is a possibility you should have in mind for the first few chars you'll play. If you're not ok with that, imho it's better if you do some research and planning beforehand. GL and HF exile! The real question should be
"Is PoE worth bricking your first characters for?" To which my response would be, absolutely, yes. Peace, -Boem- Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes

I really dont want to end up in a situation where im running through the same content over and over and over and over again.
Even games with in depth story lines i take breaks from to do other things. If i make a toon just to brick it then have to re roll a new toon to go back through the same maps the same bosses, i wont last long. I might make my 3rd guy and be done for. |

I understand the slightly OCD-ish fear to mess up one's first character. I believe, though, it's partly something we got habituated to by other games, MMOs in particular, where having to restart puts you at a severe disadvantage or equals a waste of previously invested time.
PoE is different. Not only is gear not "bound on equip" to the character, or even the account, the crafting materials ("currency") you find are also universal and the same at level 1 as at level 100. It's not the type of game where you play through the story and then you're done. Well, I guess there are people who only play for that, but I don't feel the story is really the strong point of the game (though it has gotten richer over time, with more flavor bits). It is, in many ways, an iterative game where successive characters are built upon gear, loot, lessons and preferences found, learned and formed by previous incarnations. Every time you play or build a character, you learn something new -. and you always increase your item collection and your "wealth", even if the character fizzles out (bricked, boredom, unfun, etc). But I would still follow a guide for your first character. That will give you a solid knowledge base and you won't fret so much over the choices. It's more relaxing that way. The tyranny of choice can be crippling. " That is the core of the game. At the heart, it's a loot grinder, a glorified slot machine, and a graphical roguelike. It's not Dragon Age: Origins or Planescape: Torment. It's not that kind of game. Last edited by Mivo#2486 on Jan 19, 2016, 6:15:27 AM

Not "can". "Will". You "will" brick a character. Many times. That makes it really fun when you don't. If you are guaranteed success, success loses its meaning.

" I think many people forget that. Words of truth has been said in this thread. :) " If you are looking for game with in depth story line, you should probably look in other places. PoE is grind. Sure, there is interesting world, that you can explore and learn about, but story itself isn't that deep and interesting. Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance. Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge. Last edited by Perq#4049 on Jan 19, 2016, 7:43:23 AM
