The problems are that it's harder to know what something is worth and to actually get that value for your item when you trade.

The thing is, this is an intentional consequence - when it's harder (i.e.: takes longer or is less likely) to get the "ideal" value for your trade good, you're more likely to accept a higher variance in your final price.

In other words, having a uniform currency reduces price variance, and one of the goals here is to have a high price variance. Ergo, no uniform currency.
I have wandered through insanity;
I have walked the spiral out.
Heard its twisted dreamed inanity
In a whisper, in a shout.
In the babbling cacophony
The refrains are all the same:
"[permutations of humanity]
are unworthy of the name!"
You might be more likely to accept the unknown when you trade, but I (and many like me) simply won't trade. "I have no idea what I'm doing here, do you want my stuff?" It's not how I operate.

How can that possibly be considered a good thing?

Maybe because it promotes social interaction and enforces decision-making skills? Maybe because it makes this game less like every other RPG where X=Y and that's the only possible trade you'll ever get for X?

If you don't want it to be like every other ARPG, make it so your character randomly dies if you pick up the wrong item. I don't see any other ARPG's doing that, and being unique is always better than not being frustrating, right?

Oh wait, no, that would frustrate people unnecessarily just to be different, A Concept which is a really stupid idea...

And no, this promotes less interaction because many people won't trade when they can't tell if you are screwing them or not.

Or.. you could just relax and enjoy the game, and not worry if every little thing you do is the most optimal action at every given moment.

Or.. we can put it another way. using a standard currency doesn't magically tell you when/if the trade you are making is "worth it" or not. You could trade for an item and get an awesome deal and still do something incredibly stupid. Risk is always involved with every venture, if you want a sure fire thing every time... you aren't going to get it... in this world or the real one.

But it doesn't. It does the exact opposite. People will be less inclined to trade, and therefor there will be less social interaction.

I don't see anything wrong with that, but then again I never really liked D2s trading (which is what PoE tries to mimic).

Evidence shows otherwise. People trade all the time with the current system. Once we get a proper interface, people will trade even more.

Please present your evidence then.

I would rather say that there is quite little trading going on.

The trade forums are very inactive and there is (thankfully) not hundreds of people spamming the global chat. You actually very often see the same person looking to buy or sell the same item if you look at the global chat for a while. That's a good indication that trading isn't that alive.
