Some updates:

I'm 86 now in Talisman HC and I just switched from a wand to Bino's Kitchen Knife.
Swapped Slower Projectiles for the Poison support gem (5-link) and planning to go right down in tree from Blood Drinker to Fatal Toxins (possibly even acro if I get +curse gear that will free my 4 points in Whispers of Doom).

Even though the tooltip and offense tab show a loss of 30ish % of dps, the results are breath-taking. I was clearing tier 9/10 maps pretty fast, but now I'm feeling I went back to Cruel. The combination of ED/Bino's poison DoT is absolutely ridiculous.

Single damage for bosses and tanky rares that was the main weakness of ED is so off the roof now that it's not even funny (since poison DoTs stack). Residence Dominus melted in 4 seconds. Disgusting...

More good news is that I can now use whirlwind/fortify although I will have to struggle to find the sockets for it.

On the downside I lost some cast speed that made the contagion/ED casting combo a bit more slow to execute (shield crafted cast speed can make things a bit smoother) but that's about it.


Updates 2 (edit):

Poison DoT from Bino's take care of most tight packs without the use of Contagion. I only use Contagion now on more spread out packs due to it's larger proliferation area. This considerably speeds up clearing times.

Even more ridiculous is the life regen I gain from ED with Bino's. Tab says 23k hp/sec. Truth is unless you play inside the range in which Bino's DoT proliferates (which is extremely small and can't be enlarged with nodes -I think-) you won't be seeing much of this regen anyway. BUT. Your minions will, especially melee ones like zombies which will be practically immortal (in their undeath). I will most probably drop their Fortify.

Sadly a few hours after my previous post, Poison got hit by a major fix what practically nerfed the ED/Poison combo to oblivion.

From a preliminary test I run on some maps single target damage was cut down to approximately a quarter of its previous value.

Bino's REgen effect still sits at around 7k hp/s (previously 28k) which is still sick, but now you got to connect a lot more hits for the DoT effect to stack at its pre-nerf potency. Slower Projectiles as a 6th link is therefore, more than even, an absolute pain in the ass to use since you got to be on, give or take, melee range to hit reliably.

I may be changing that to empower (when i get my hands on a L3 gem) or faster projectiles at a cost of greatly reduced AoE.

Or as Glick suggested drop the shield for a dual wield Bino's / Consuming Dark dagger setup, which will allow me to drop the Poison support gem for Faster Projectiles / Empower / Culling Strike.
