I'm a simple gamer that responds to the ambience of a game.
Path of exile has the grim athmosphere that draws me into the game, diablo does not.
When I played diablo 3 I felt that I lost the feeling of difficulty or `challenging`, which I did have in diablo 2.
I thought that this was because I had become a seasoned gamer.
Whether that's true or not, I have that feeling when playing Exile.
in D2 you had a feeling of difficulty and chalenge until Blood Raven? i dont think so! because that is the similar amount of gameplay with D3 and the King boss, plus the addition of Inferno difficulty.
now think about it again.

I'm more interested in how each games crafting is going to turn out, since that's what most of the grinding is for right? Not because you like clearing the ledge 20 times a day for the scenery.
We all know how PoEs crafting works right?
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/17206785
Well Diablo 3 is comparable
Recipes:Teaches artisan how to make a certain thing(Axe, Bow, Want, etc), they drop randomly, unlocked when your artisan is the appropriate level.
Ok so this looks like a Orb of Transmutation/Alchemy in the eyes of a PoE player, but without the requirement of a base item and it's shards/stones
When you go to craft this item, you're going to get a set of random properties, on top of some already supplied by the recipe.
PoE player sees the use of Transmutation to get random properties and Orbs of Augmentation to get more of them
When you want to re-roll the statistics it was mentioned in an old interview/FAQ(I can't track it down atm and it doesn't seem to be live on the beta since the wiki doesn't mention it) if you've got the crafting materials you can continue to maximize the current mods by re-rolling with the current stats as the minimum roll, until you hit the maximum.
PoE player sees the use of Orb of Transformation, but it doesn't upgrade, only replaces the current modifiers
Artisans are able to add sockets to items
PoE players can do the same, with some added flavor to their system with Jewelers, Fusing and Chromatic orbs
To begin crafting you're required to pick up the salvage cube which you should get pretty early and you salvage whatever you come across, or sell it to vendors because crafting costs gold as well as crafting materials
PoE players begin crafting whenever an Orb is dropped
To the current PoE beta tester, you're shooting for +ED% +x-y physdmg and +atk% for physical characters, getting all of those rolls better seems impossible currently, if I could get those mods on an item in diablo 3 I wouldn't have to worry so much about finding upgrades, just rolling them in the first place like we are currently in PoE.
this is all subject to change of course, from what I see on paper the illusion of progress on Diablo 3s salvaging system looks pretty nice compared to the gambling of Orb drops.

I think you have put your finger on what I was trying to express earlier bread
PoE makes me feel like I am in the game. D3 feels like I am just spectating. Which I am at present due to their servers having been "down for maintenance" for over 18 hours at least since the last patch and this battletag debacle....
I used to be apathetic, now I just don't care.

The problem I have with diablo3's crafting system is it takes a lot away from the item finding aspect because now instead of searching for the type of item you want and the mods you can simply salvage anything you find and then craft the highest level items you have available
of course that's also a plus because now gear is more accessible however considering diablo3 is entirely based around pve the crafting system seems more suitable for a pvp based game as it decreases the need to do any item hunting

Nice write up.
From the screenshots and gameplay that I've seen of each I don't think D3 will hold my interest outside of playing for the story sake.
PoE definitely has a more interesting enviroment + and seemingly an interesting character rebuildability that has kept my eyes glued to the beta invite timer with fingers crossed.
Thanks I was really worried when I wrote it up that there would be a lot of complaining but it's actually been pretty tame
Diablo3 will probably be fun the first play through with 3-4 characters after that you'll probably only play it cause friends are playing it or you've managed to get lucky and you're making money off the rmah (however anyone who doesn't have a lot of past experience with ARPG's/dungeon crawlers will probably have much more fun)
The environment is definitely quite nice in path of exile but I think a lot of that comes from us being able to see more of the environment then in diablo3
The character rebuildability is path of exiles greatest strength over diablo3 and I think you'll definitely have some fun with it

That's funny, I feel the opposite. Path of Exile feels rather sterile and slow placed to me. My experience with the Diablo 3 beta felt a lot more visceral. Everything felt more tactile with the way abilities smashed bits furniture and sent dismembered limbs flying in every direction. Different strokes I guess.

That's not true at all
Diablo 2's gambling most of the time you'd get low tier junk
Diablo3 crafting you choose the tier and if it's rare or magic
Lower level crafted items are magic with a set modifier which really helps you in your leveling and as you level up you're still much more likely to get something good from diablo3 crafting then diablo2's gambling

Well I heard gambling used to be a lot more profitable earlier on in D2, but I do hope crafting will only make sidegrades and not diminish looting. I think the superior crafted items in the beta have more to do with having a higher level than what you'd normal see drop from the low level monsters.

Crafting has access to all the mods a drop does so it does diminish looting quite a bit imo
