Hall of Grandmasters : The Unique map (Dont try it)

It is a hard map, no doubt. Oba is horrible unless you are REALLY fast. I tried it and ran out of time. It's not the monsters, it is the time. These 2 and alluring abyss are the only maps I used to not be able to do (I don't know about some of the higher new maps yet because they never drop).
Censored.

So here we are, entering the hall of grandmasters map. In the hall of heroes, we killed off the players that bought the grandmasters pack with ease on the first wave, second wave... and we thought,

Oh man this map is easy!

Wait.

Guess again.

That's how they get you - some players submitted super easy characters, which get sorted to the front of the Hall, then there's a big level gap as you get to people's endgame characters who do not mess around.

Not a lot of people have submitted PvP specs, so as others in the thread have said, playing a PvP character will give you a substantial advantage.

They were circling us infront , behind, sideways, and if there was bottom and up, I'm pretty sure those exiles would be there too just to smash our heads in and fuck our days up.

Technically, the players making the Grandmasters did the majority of difficulty balancing in the map, but this one's on me. It's the Grandmaster map, so I didn't want to make anyone's AI less deadly than they could be :)

This overwhelmingness was actually something we actively tried to avoid in designing the high-level Warbands fights.

A group of 5 rogue exiles would produce a similar situation in which separation and active group management was mandatory at all levels. That's why most Warbands only really use one skill initially, and leaders spending a lot of time doing nothing until you kill most of their allies. The rigid class distinctions also help to combat this.

With Oba, I think the main thing to remember is clear first loot afterwards. Back in rampage I cleared it easily with a high 80's STer with fairly modest gear. Ignoring the (master crafted) 5L on my chest; I don't think I paid more than 25C for anything in it.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?
Dan_GGG, any chance that, as suggested earlier in the thread, you add a warning to the current flavour text, e.g.

Contains the Immortalised Grandmasters

The grandest and greatest ever to fight,
Divine the champions stand tall,
But match their power, best their might,
And even the immortal may fall.

Warning: This is one of the most
difficult maps in the game.

As currently implemented, it has a difficulty level that is completely out of whack with anything a player could expect from the information presented to him in-game, namely level (71), rarity (unique), a snappy flavour text, and a reference to Immortalized Grandmasters that require out-of-game knowledge to understand.

Even better from the perspective of enabling the player to make an informed choice would be making it a level 82 map rather than a level 71 map, but I guess there are loot implications to that which prohibit that more rational designation of in-game difficulty.

Our warnings have a history of being disbelieved.

We called this map a "deathtrap" in news posts about it. Then when it was released and Hegemony beat it, we got a lot of feedback that the map was too easy and that we'd nerfed the Grandmasters too much.

There was also feedback where people didn't believe that Oba's Cursed Trove would actually be fatal. People died to it early on and asked us to specify that fatal actually meant "fatal" and not just "hazardous".

So I'm not sure it would be that valuable to add one, especially if it broke the fourth wall.
The flavour text already kind of does this in a non-fourth wall breaking way, by telling you that the Grandmasters are the toughest fighters ever.

You guys should design a unique Malformation map named Death Trap.
When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted.

I'm pretty sure that's rollable as a rare map name already.

So basically you got (and listened to?) feedback that one map was too easy because a ridiculously overpowered streamer beat it and mocked a bunch of high end supporters while doing so, and that another was too hard because some people don't know the meaning of words.

And they wonder why I don't let myself get into Mapping...

I like the eternal optimism of some HC players, "No way GGG would let this Vagan fight/Unique Map/Bandit Quest/et al actually kill us!"

My reading comprehension is not particulary good, which is another reason why I stick to the safety of softcore.

Anyways, you should come mapping one day - some of them are REALLY quite awesome to run consecutively.

Massive thanks to GGG for producing such a fun and engaging game, it has taken up faaaaaaar too much of my life over the last 5 years.

Best of luck in the future!

I think GGG have this global mind set of "if one Streamer thinks it's easy, we should go full Kiwi on it so no one does".
look at the way they balance things, from content to content-gating.
the goal of making it hard-enough-to-be-interesting for the "elite" cookie-cutter-build Streamers and full-mirror-geared Economy Lords is often achieved, together with making it completely inaccessible for everyone else.

in any case, I'll just hold on to this as a trophy

I'll never actually attempt it because I know what will happen, so why bother?
Alva: I'm sweating like a hog in heat
Shadow: That was fun
