TUTORIAL - How to play Path of Exile on LINUX

This could be worth looking into. The only reason I'm using Windows right now is PoE.

hey guys, i just dropped in to tell you, that need to disable compiz / composite rendering in ur linux distros to have best gaming perfomance.

you could also use a lightweight desktop like xubuntu or lubuntu provide and u will have good gaming performance.

It makes absolutely NO difference on modern computers while gaming.
For example, i have two Linux installations. Kubuntu 13.04 and Arch Linux, where only Arch is optimized for gaming with an absolute leightweigt installation, no Effects and so on...
And theres not a single fps difference in games like TF2, Serious Sam 3 or Benchmarking Tests like Heaven 4.0

Optimizing that stuff is only helpfull if you happen to have a 6-10 year old computer

Instead of a WINE wrapper, why not just grab VirtualBox ( the one directly from the Oracle site ), and get a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate from digitalriver?

Thanks, thats a good idea and i will have a look into it ;)
This is my plight: When I open Path of Exile, at first, it is extremely laggy. This does not completely bother me, although. Next, if I'm in Windowed mode, I have click under the button I want to press to actually press it. Finally, when I enter the game, before I actually load into the world an error message pops up saying
"Unable to create texture. D3DERR_NOTAVALIABLE not available"
Then "Runtime error! Program: C:... The application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information"

If somebody could help me that would be great.

you need to install directx into your wine enviroment. Go get winetricks, then run winetricks dlls. Also just a heads up, poe runs like shit in wine compared to windows. Also, depending on your distro, you might have to override some dlls. A lot of distros dont use a generic wine enviroment on install, which causes issues, to say the least.

thyreil, Linux still has major issues with sdl/opengl and compositing. To pretend it doesnt is pure nonsense. Its a huge topic on thier respective forums. If you want eyecandy, use compositing, if you want performance, dont.

I'm a Linux Mint 15 KDE user and got PoE running without problems so far, exept for some stuttering after login to character. It's not so difficult to setup the whole thing:

1. install wine & winetricks
2. start winetricks and install libs - "winetricks usp10 d3dx9_36 vcrun2010 riched20" (riched20 is optional) ( following this guide http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=25078&iTestingId=78043)
3. the "lazy" way i used: copy the in windows installed PoE Client (around 6,3GB) to your linux partition
4. double click the Client.exe

for me it fired up the game almost immediately: no "allocating space" whatsoever, the laucher popped up for like a second and started the game. starting blackscreen with the GGG logo above loaded like 30-60 seconds and i logged in with no problems.

i have to play some hours to say something about stability.

€dit: i still get some stuttering when a lot of action is going on, but except for that it works fine, way better than with playonlinux

Trying now, will update if it works.

EDIT: Got "Failed resetting Direct3D device objects" so I had to set the parameter borderless_windowed_fullscreen=true in production_Config.ini and it worked.

Why would you play on Linux when you play like the majority of the human populations on Mac or Windows machines.

Linux...lol, early 2000s want their OS back.

You do understand that the Linux kernel is by far the most powerful operating system ever created right?

you do understand that Windows is the most used operating system in the planet. Checkmate
