the problem (imo) with this support is that there isn't a single thing you can do to reduce the resistances to chaos damage, and there are a LOT (and by alot almost everything by endgame is either "resists elemental damage" or "resists chaos")of chaos resist mobs.

take p.e. a lighting spell:
added lightning is 50% as effective as added chaos.

in a typical gear setup let's say you will have 80% spell damage from passives + 40% elemental damage. Add an additional 50% spell damage from shield and an additional 80% spell damage and 20% elemental damage from sceptre/wand/jewels.

that brings things up to 210% spell damage + 60% elemntal damage.

more/less damage, crits, cast spedd, etc all apply the same to both added support gems and they are multiplicative so we can safely remove them from the equation.

that means that added lighting does 50% *(1+2.1+0.6)/(1+2.1)= 60% of the damage of added chaos.

so far so good.

add in the fact that if you will have penetration and either condactivity or elemental weakness, which would at least double the effectivness of added lightning, and that on a chaos resist mob added chaos gets cut down by 75%!

this means than on half the mobs you will be doing 20% more damage with the added lightning and on the other half of the mobs you will be doing 480% more! WITH the added bonus that added lightning damage will also allow you longer shock stacks and etc.

given that your gem slots are usually reserved and really tight as a elemental spellcaster (discharge and ek builds left outside of this) by things like pen/faster casting/conc/chain/lmp/leech/mana leech/etc you usually have in a 5l a single spot available for an added gem (and that's not guaranteed either).

so that makes added chaos pointless for spells imo.

i personally think this is one of the best supports in the game due to its potential to not only trivialize reflect but do insane dps with shit gear and without any real passive investment. currently running high crit + attack speed cyclone with cast on crit lv1 ice nova, and max block, spell block, dodge and spell dodge.
studying for GGG's C++ technical exam...

For the record, "Resists Elemental Damage" has nothing to do with Chaos, which isn't an element. The three elemental damage types are Fire, Cold and Lightning.
the quality bonus from added chaos damage doesnt affect the tooltip Damage over time effect of viperstrike, does it work at all or is there something im missing?
Viper Strike's tooltip explicitly lists Base Damage - 'Base' stands for 'without modifiers'. I am fairly certain this is because the description can only accept one set of multipliers, and it is currently set to grab the attack's damage multipliers.

Viper Strike deals Chaos Damage over Time. Increased Chaos Damage does apply.
If I have 2 of these linked with same ability does the damage stack? Seems like it should but every time I try to double up a support gem it never stacks, instead the game just chooses the higher level one and ignores the other.
This is exactly how they are supposed to work.
Support Gems never stack.
Sorry Exile, but your loot is in another dungeon!
